Cavalera Conspiracy, the Brazilian-American heavy metal supergroup, emerged from the ashes of a decade-long feud between brothers Max and Igor Cavalera, legendary figures from Sepultura. Initially formed in 2007 as Inflikted, a name change was necessitated for legal reasons, eventually solidifying as Cavalera Conspiracy. In a surprising twist, the brothers further embraced their shared legacy, adopting the name "Cavalera" in 2022 to release re-recorded versions of classic Sepultura albums in 2023.

The band`s genesis is a compelling story. Following their split from Sepultura (Igor departing in 2006), Max had established Soulfly. A chance phone call in July 2006 between the brothers led to Igor joining Max onstage with Soulfly, performing Sepultura tracks. This impromptu collaboration sparked the idea for a new project, a raw, powerful sound fueled by their shared history. Completing the lineup, Max recruited Soulfly guitarist Marc Rizzo and Gojira bassist Joe Duplantier. Their debut album was recorded at Undercity Studios in Los Angeles in July 2007, engineered and co-produced by Logan Mader.

The chains weren’t just haphazardly slapped on; they were strategically attached to corners or covers, protecting the spines from wear and tear – preventing the equivalent of a record skipping during a crucial guitar solo. This meant the books were displayed spine-out, fore-edges facing the reader—a unique presentation that facilitated easy access without tangling the chains. It was a carefully orchestrated system, preventing theft and maximizing accessibility. Librarians even added extra protection, invoking curses on any would-be book thieves, adding a bit of gothic metal to the whole operation.

Removing a book required the librarian's key, making them the exclusive DJs of these literary archives. It was a high-security system, and a testament to the value placed on knowledge, a powerful riff in the history of information access.

Born from the vibrant underground scene of Oxnard, California, Dead Heat is not just another crossover band; they are a potent blend of hardcore punk and thrash metal energy.

Death Angel, the seminal thrash metal band from Daly City, California, exploded onto the scene in 1982, leaving an undeniable mark on the Bay Area and beyond. Initially active until 1991, their legendary status solidified through a relentless touring schedule and a string of critically acclaimed albums. Their discography boasts nine studio albums, two demos, a box set, and three live albums – a testament to their enduring legacy.

While the lineup has seen significant changes over the decades, guitarist Rob Cavestany remains the sole constant member. He and vocalist Mark Osegueda (who joined in 1984) are the only members to appear on every studio album, forming the core of Death Angel`s signature sound.

In the 1980s, Death Angel reigned supreme as a Bay Area thrash titan, sharing stages with heavyweights like Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer, Exodus, Testament, Overkill, D.R.I., Mercyful Fate, and Possessed. Their impact is undeniable; often cited as a leader of the second wave of thrash, they’re considered part of the genre`s "Big Eight" (alongside Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax, Testament, Exodus, and Overkill) and the "Big Six" of Bay Area thrash (with Exodus, Testament, Lȧȧz Rockit, Forbidden, and Vio-lence).

Following the underground success of The Ultra-Violence (1987) and Frolic Through the Park (1988), Death Angel signed to Geffen Records in 1989, releasing Act III the following year. Tragedy struck during the Act III tour when drummer Andy Galeon was severely injured in a bus accident, leading to the band`s initial disbandment in 1991.

Death Angel triumphantly returned in 2001 (minus original rhythm guitarist Gus Pepa) at the "Thrash of the Titans" benefit concert for Testaments Chuck Billy. Since then, they’ve released six more albums, including 2019s Humanicide, which earned them a Grammy nomination. With a tenth studio album tentatively slated for 2025, Death Angel continues to prove their enduring power and influence on the thrash metal landscape.

Forbidden: Bay Area Thrash Titans

Hailing from the fertile San Francisco Bay Area thrash metal scene, Forbidden emerged in 1985 as Forbidden Evil. The band, initially featuring Robb Flynn (later of Vio-lence and Machine Head) and drummer Jim Pittman, solidified their lineup with Craig Locicero (guitar), Russ Anderson (vocals), and John Tegio (bass). Flynn christened the band after a War Cry song on the Metal Massacre IV compilation. They shortened their name to Forbidden in 1987.

Throughout their existence, Forbidden have endured multiple breakups and reunions, along with significant lineup changes. Their initial split occurred in 1997, only to be followed by a reunion in 2007. After an indefinite hiatus starting in 2012, they triumphantly returned in 2023 with a lineup comprised of Norman Skinner (vocals), Craig Locicero (guitar), Matt Camacho (bass), and Chris Kontos (drums).

Forbidden quickly earned their stripes alongside Bay Area giants like Exodus (featuring original Forbidden drummer Paul Bostaph), Testament, Death Angel, Vio-lence, and Defiance. They cemented their place as one of the "Big Six" of the Bay Area thrash scene, later joined by Lȧȧz Rockit. Their influence on the underground metal community is undeniable.

Their debut, Forbidden Evil (1988), is widely considered a thrash classic. The follow-up, Twisted into Form (1990), is a tech-thrash masterpiece, showcasing their technical prowess. While initially rooted in technical thrash, Forbidden later explored alternative and groove metal elements, most notably on their 1997 album, Green. Their legacy remains firmly etched in the annals of thrash metal history, securing their status as true Bay Area legends.

Havok, the Denver, Colorado thrash metal powerhouse, ignited the scene in 2004. While the band's lineup has undergone significant evolution – with frontman David Sanchez the sole original member remaining – their impact remains undeniable. Their blistering sound, forged from a potent blend of 80s thrash, NWOBHM, death metal, hardcore punk, and progressive elements, has solidified their place as a key player in the late 2000s/early 2010s thrash metal revival, alongside bands like Bonded by Blood, Evile, Hatchet, Municipal Waste, and Warbringer.

Havok's discography boasts five studio albums: Burn (2009), Time Is Up (2011), Unnatural Selection (2013), Conformicide (2017), and V (2020). Currently, the band features Sanchez on vocals, Pete Webber on drums, and Nick Schendzielos on bass. They continue to craft new music, promising more high-octane thrash to come.

Early Days: The band's origins trace back to David Sanchez and drummer Haakon Sjoegren. Their quest for a guitarist led to the recruitment of Shawn Chavez via flyers plastered across Denver. Rounding out their initial lineup with bassist Marcus Corich, Havok unleashed their debut demo, "Thrash Can," in 2004, followed by the self-released Murder by Metal EP in 2005. By 2007, Tyler Cantrell had taken over bass duties, and Rich Tice became the drummer.

High on Fire, the Oakland, California-bred heavy metal titans, emerged from the ashes of the late summer of 1998. Founded by Sleep guitarist Matt Pike, alongside drummer Des Kensel and bassist George Rice (formerly of Dear Deceased – who initially auditioned as vocalist!), the band quickly established a ferocious reputation.

Their initial foray was a three-track EP in 1999, released via 12th Records. These tracks were later resurrected and formed the core of their debut full-length, The Art of Self Defense (Mans Ruin Records, March 7, 2000). Following Mans Ruin`s demise, Tee Pee Records re-released the album with bonus tracks in 2001.

That same year marked a significant turning point: High on Fire signed with Relapse Records, unleashing Surrounded by Thieves on May 28, 2002. This solidified their place in the heavy metal scene, paving the way for a prolific career spanning nine studio albums, culminating in their latest release, Cometh the Storm, in 2024. Their impact reached a global peak with their 2019 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance, earned for the blistering "Electric Messiah." From humble beginnings to Grammy glory, High on Fire’s legacy is cemented as a cornerstone of modern heavy metal.

Power Trip, the Dallas, Texas crossover thrash titans, exploded onto the scene in 2008. Their 2020 lineup featured Riley Gale (vocals), Blake Ibanez (lead guitar), Nick Stewart (rhythm guitar), Chris Whetzel (bass), and Chris Ulsh (drums), the latter replacing Marcus Johnson in 2009. Following the tragic passing of Gale in 2020, Seth Gilmore took the reins as vocalist in 2023.

The band left an undeniable mark on the 2010s thrash metal landscape. Their two studio albums, Manifest Decimation (2013) and the critically acclaimed Nightmare Logic (2017) – the latter charting on Billboard – cemented their status. They also released a compilation of early material and a live album. Their impact extended to prestigious awards, with a live performance of "Executioner's Tax (Swing of the Axe)" earning a Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance.

The band's legacy continues to resonate within the metal community.

Sepultura, meaning "grave" in Portuguese, exploded onto the global metal scene in 1984, formed by brothers Max and Igor Cavalera in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Trivium, the Orlando, Florida-bred heavy metal titans, exploded onto the scene in 1999. The quartet—vocalist/guitarist Matt Heafy, guitarist Corey Beaulieu, bassist Paolo Gregoletto, and drummer Alex Bent—have since carved a formidable path through the metal landscape.

Their debut album, Ember to Inferno (2003), a seminal release via Lifeforce Records, established their raw talent.
