Sodom

Formed in Germany in 1981, Sodom stands as one of the definitive pioneering forces in European extreme music. Alongside their domestic contemporaries, they helped establish the ferocious Teutonic thrash metal movement, bridging the unhinged velocity of early speed metal with darker, sinister thematic elements. In their formative years, the band developed a raw and uncompromising sonic assault that culminated in their 1986 debut full-length, Obsessed by Cruelty. Marked by primitive aggression and chaotic energy, the album became an essential cornerstone of the first wave of black metal, leaving an indelible imprint on the burgeoning extreme underground.

As the decade progressed, Sodom tightened their musicianship, steering their sound toward razor-sharp, socially conscious thrash metal. The release of Persecution Mania in 1987 signaled this creative maturation, laying the groundwork for 1989s monumental Agent Orange. Propelled by searing anti-war narratives and devastating, precise guitar work, Agent Orange became a landmark commercial and critical triumph that solidified the group as global heavy metal heavyweights. Sodom continued to evolve their palette throughout the early 1990s, integrating melodic textures on Better Off Dead in 1990 before pivoting into the crushing, death-metal-adjacent groove and intensity of 1992s Tapping the Vein.

Defined by blistering tempos, gritty and commanding vocals, and thunderous, militaristic rhythms, Sodom`s musical style has managed to stay fiercely aggressive while continually adapting across thrash, speed, and groove metal subgenres. With more than four decades of relentless studio and stage activity, their legacy remains towering, as evidenced by an enduring international following of hundreds of thousands of devoted listeners. Through steadfast dedication to their abrasive roots, Sodom persists as an uncompromising institution and an essential chapter in the history of heavy music.
