Tygers of Pan Tang

Formed in the United Kingdom in 1978, Tygers of Pan Tang emerged as one of the pivotal torchbearers of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Taking their name from Michael Moorcocks fantasy mythology, the band quickly distinguished themselves from their late-seventies peers by combining the raw, high-tempo aggression of nascent speed metal with driving hard rock grooves. Their full-length debut, Wild Cat, released in September 1980, captured the ferocious energy of Britains burgeoning metal underground and firmly established the group as a vital force in the movement.

The early 1980s marked the bands most prolific and creatively fertile chapter, yielding a streak of seminal heavy metal records. With the release of Spellbound and Crazy Nights in 1981, Tygers of Pan Tang embraced sharp musicianship and intricate guitar work, pushing the boundaries of classic British metal. As the decade progressed, their style adapted to the changing rock landscape; albums such as 1982s The Cage and 1985`s The Wreck-Age saw the group incorporating glossy production and arena-ready hooks reminiscent of glam metal and melodic hard rock, which expanded their international commercial footprint.

Over more than four decades of activity, Tygers of Pan Tang have earned a respected place in rock history for their versatile musicianship, characterized by razor-sharp riffs, soaring melodic vocals, and relentless rhythmic drive. While their commercial heights during the NWOBHM boom inspired a generation of subsequent speed and thrash metal acts, the band has maintained an enduring cult following worldwide. Today, they stand as an essential institution of British metal, celebrated both for their foundational early catalog and their persistent devotion to hard-hitting rock and roll.
