2014

Formation and Early Releases

Mom Jeans was formed in early 2014 in Berkeley, California, by drummer Austin Carango and lead singer Eric Butler while attending UC Berkeley. They recorded the Spring Demo in May 2014, a six-track acoustic EP. Later, they expanded to include Josh Perline and David McDowall, adding electric instrumentation to their self-titled debut released on cassette by Fourth Row Records. Shortly after, McDowall left the band. Later in 2014, they recorded the Allergic EP with Carango switching to drums and Perline to guitar, before Perline departed, with Gabriel Paganin joining as live bassist.
2016

First Full-Length Album: Best Buds

On July 3, 2016, Mom Jeans self-released their debut full-length album, Best Buds, initially on cassette through Fourth Row Records. This album solidified their place in the emo and indie rock scene with its heartfelt lyrics and engaging sound. Subsequently, Mom Jeans signed to Counter Intuitive Records, a Massachusetts-based label, which re-released Best Buds on vinyl in November 2016, helping the album reach a wider audience and elevating the band's status in the underground emo community.
2017

Splits, Lineup Changes, and Label Developments

In 2017, the band released a split EP with Fresno's Graduating Life on March 7, leading to Bart Thompson joining Mom Jeans as guitarist. Later that year, in October, they participated in another split EP titled NOW That's What I Call Music Vol. 420 with Pictures of Vernon and Prince Daddy & the Hyena, released by Counter Intuitive Records. Around the same time, Mom Jeans announced a signing with SideOneDummy Records, planning a 2018 album release. However, the band later decided to continue with Counter Intuitive Records instead.
2018

Second Album Puppy Love Release

Mom Jeans released their second full-length album, Puppy Love, on July 3, 2018, through Counter Intuitive Records. The album featured a refined emo and indie rock sound, further developing their musical identity. UK label Big Scary Monsters also issued a limited variant of the album, helping expand the band's international presence. Puppy Love marked a significant creative growth for Mom Jeans, drawing positive critical attention and solidifying their emerging fanbase.
2019

New Directions and Touring

In early 2019, Mom Jeans began working on demos for a new LP titled Sweet Tooth, following the departure of bassist Gabriel Paganin. The band announced touring plans with Hobo Johnson later that year, featuring guest bassist Billy Bouzos from indie label Slang Church. This period marked a transitional phase as the band navigated lineup changes while continuing to build their live performance reputation and prepared for their next studio project.
2021-2022

Release of Sweet Tooth and Growing Popularity

The first single from Sweet Tooth, entitled "What's Up?", was released on September 28, 2021, building anticipation for the album. Sweet Tooth was officially released on February 25, 2022. Around this time, Mom Jeans saw a surge in popularity, particularly due to the viral presence of their music on TikTok. The band's relatable lyrics and nostalgic emo sound connected deeply with younger audiences, sparking a resurgence in the emo genre and significantly expanding their fanbase through social media engagement.
2023

Bear Market Album and Evolution of Sound

On November 13, 2023, Mom Jeans announced their album Bear Market, released on November 17, 2023. This album features re-recorded songs from their previous work, showcasing a new 'poppier' and more produced sound. This evolution reflects the band's exploration of broader musical styles while retaining the emotive core that defines their style. The release received attention for its fresh approach and signaled the band's ongoing creative vitality and adaptation within the indie and emo music scenes.

Story of Mom Jeans

Mom Jeans. (stylized as Mom Jeans.), the Berkeley, California-bred alternative/indie rock band, emerged in early 2014. Founded by drummer Austin Carango and vocalist Eric Butler, the duo initially recorded the six-track Spring Demo EP. Released in May 2014 on cassette via Fourth Row Records (Northern California), this acoustic-only effort showcased the band`s nascent sound.

The self-titled debut EP followed, featuring expanded instrumentation. Josh Perline joined on bass/vocals and David McDowall on drums, though McDowall`s tenure was short-lived. Allergic, their next EP (also pre-dating their first LP), saw Carango transitioning to drums, Perline to guitar, and bass duties shared between the remaining members. This lineup shift also saw the departure of Perline (amicably) and the addition of Gabe Paganin on bass for live performances.

Mom Jeans. independently released their full-length debut, Best Buds, on July 3, 2016, initially on cassette through Fourth Row Records. Counter Intuitive Records (Massachusetts) then picked up the album, issuing a vinyl pressing in November 2016.
