1981

The Abbott brothers form Pantera in Arlington, Texas

Drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott and guitarist Dimebag Darrell (then Diamond Darrell) formed Pantera in Arlington, Texas. Bassist Rex Brown and vocalist Terry Glaze joined the lineup soon after. The band performed in local clubs, covering songs by Kiss and Van Halen. Between 1983 and 1985, they released three independent full-length albums through their own Metal Magic Records: Metal Magic, Projects in the Jungle, and I Am the Night. Their father, songwriter Jerry Abbott, produced these early recordings at Pantego Sound Studios.

1986-1988

Phil Anselmo replaces Terry Glaze and sings on Power Metal

Terry Glaze left Pantera in 1986 due to creative disagreements. Following a series of auditions, New Orleans vocalist Phil Anselmo joined the band in 1987. With Anselmo on lead vocals, the group recorded and released Power Metal in 1988 on Metal Magic Records. The album featured tracks such as 'Over and Out' and 'Proud to Be Loud', with guitarist Dimebag Darrell sharing lead vocal duties on the track 'Caged in a Rage'. It was their final independent release before signing to a major label.

1990

Atco Records releases Cowboys from Hell

Pantera signed with Atco Records after A&R representative Mark Ross saw them perform at a venue in Texas. The band released Cowboys from Hell in July 1990. Terry Date produced the album at Pantego Sound Studios. Singles included 'Cowboys from Hell', 'Cemetery Gates', and 'Psycho Holiday'. The album reached number 27 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart and later received a platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America for sales exceeding one million copies in the United States.

1991

Pantera performs at Monsters of Rock in Moscow

On September 28, 1991, Pantera performed at the Monsters of Rock festival at Tushino Airfield in Moscow, Russia. The free outdoor event took place shortly after the 1991 Soviet coup attempt. Pantera shared the festival bill with AC/DC, Metallica, The Black Crowes, and E.S.T. Official crowd estimates ranged between 500,000 and 1.6 million attendees. Pantera played a set that included 'Cowboys from Hell' and 'Primal Concrete Sledge', which was filmed for the documentary release For Those About to Rock.

1992

Vulgar Display of Power enters the Billboard top 50

Atco released Pantera's sixth studio album, Vulgar Display of Power, in February 1992. Produced again by Terry Date alongside Vinnie Paul, the record debuted at number 44 on the Billboard 200 chart. It produced the singles 'Mouth for War', 'This Love', and 'Walk'. 'Mouth for War' debuted at number one on the UK Metal chart, replacing Iron Maiden's 'Be Quick or Be Dead'. In 1997, the RIAA certified the album double platinum for two million sales in the United States.

1994

Far Beyond Driven debuts at number one on the Billboard 200

In March 1994, EastWest Records released Far Beyond Driven. The record entered the Billboard 200 and the Australian ARIA Albums Chart at number one during its first week of release. It contained twelve tracks, including the singles 'I'm Broken', '5 Minutes Alone', and a cover version of Black Sabbath's 'Planet Caravan'. 'I'm Broken' earned the group their first Grammy Award nomination for Best Metal Performance in 1995. The band headlined the 1994 Monsters of Rock festival at Donington Park.

1996

The Great Southern Trendkill charts at number four

Pantera released The Great Southern Trendkill in May 1996 through EastWest Records. While the Abbott brothers and Rex Brown tracked instruments at Chasin Jason Studios in Dalworthington Gardens, Texas, Phil Anselmo recorded his vocals at Trent Reznor's Nothing Studios in New Orleans. The album debuted at number four on the Billboard 200. The single 'Suicide Note Pt. I' earned a 1997 Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance, and 'Drag the Waters' became the only song on the album to receive a music video.

1997

Official Live: 101 Proof captures the band in concert

In July 1997, EastWest Records issued Pantera's first official live album, Official Live: 101 Proof. Recorded during the 1996 and 1997 tour cycles for The Great Southern Trendkill, the 16-track compilation reached number 15 on the Billboard 200. It contained fourteen live cuts and two newly recorded studio tracks: 'Where You Come From' and 'I Can't Hide'. Both studio tracks were produced by Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul at Chasin Jason Studios. The album received gold certification from the RIAA in 1999.

2000

Reinventing the Steel is released

Pantera released their ninth and final studio album, Reinventing the Steel, in March 2000 on Elektra Records. The band self-produced the record in Texas, featuring Slayer guitarist Kerry King as a guest soloist on 'Goddamn Electric'. The album reached number four on the Billboard 200 and number two on the Billboard Canadian Albums chart. Singles included 'Revolution Is My Name', which received a Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance, and 'I'll Cast a Shadow'. The band toured Europe and North America in support.

2001-2003

Pantera plays final show in Japan and officially disbands

Pantera played their final concert on August 28, 2001, at the Beast Feast festival in Yokohama, Japan. The band canceled subsequent European tour dates following the September 11 attacks. Anselmo turned his attention to his side projects Down and Superjoint Ritual, while the Abbott brothers formed Damageplan with singer Pat Lachman and bassist Bob Zilla. After prolonged communication breakdowns and public disagreements among members in music publications, Pantera officially disbanded in the autumn of 2003.

2004

Dimebag Darrell is killed in Columbus, Ohio

On December 8, 2004, guitarist Dimebag Darrell was shot and killed onstage while performing with Damageplan at the Alrosa Villa nightclub in Columbus, Ohio. Nathan Gale, a 25-year-old gunman, killed Darrell and three other people before being shot and killed by police officer James Niggemeyer. Dimebag Darrell was buried in a Kiss Kasket donated by Gene Simmons at Moore Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Arlington, Texas, accompanied by Eddie Van Halen's 1979 black-and-yellow striped Charvel electric guitar.

2018

Vinnie Paul Abbott dies in Las Vegas

Drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott died on June 22, 2018, at his home in Las Vegas, Nevada, at the age of 54. The Clark County coroner's office determined the cause of death to be dilated cardiomyopathy and severe coronary artery disease. At the time of his death, Vinnie Paul was the active drummer for the heavy metal band Hellyeah, with whom he had recorded five studio albums. He was buried beside his mother Carolyn and brother Darrell in Arlington, Texas.

2022-2023

Surviving members announce and begin a Pantera tribute tour

In July 2022, surviving members Phil Anselmo and Rex Brown announced a tour under the Pantera name, with the approval of the Abbott brothers' estates. Guitarist Zakk Wylde and Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante joined the touring lineup. Their first performance took place on December 2, 2022, at the Hell & Heaven Metal Fest in Texcoco, Mexico. In 2023 and 2024, the group toured North America and Europe as direct support on Metallica's M72 World Tour and headlined individual arena shows.
