Witchfinder General

Formed in 1979 during the height of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, Witchfinder General emerged as one of the most influential yet underappreciated pioneers of traditional doom metal. Hailing from the United Kingdom and borrowing their moniker from the classic Vincent Price horror film, the band stood apart from their speed-obsessed contemporaries by leaning heavily into the dark, trudging, and occult-tinged territory first mapped out by Black Sabbath.

The groups signature sound is characterized by crushing, fuzz-drenched guitar riffs, thunderous tempos, and ominous vocal delivery. While fundamentally rooted in traditional heavy metal, Witchfinder Generals sludgy, downtuned approach became a vital blueprint for future iterations of doom, stoner metal, and drone.
