2006

Formation of The Gaslight Anthem

The Gaslight Anthem was formed in 2006 in New Brunswick, New Jersey. The band lineup coalesced with Brian Fallon (lead vocals, rhythm guitar, piano), Alex Rosamilia (lead guitar, backing vocals), Alex Levine (bass guitar, backing vocals), and Benny Horowitz (drums, percussion, backing vocals). They evolved from previous bands of Brian Fallon and settled on their current name and lineup after some changes. Their first gig took place at The Only Game in Town in Somerville, New Jersey.
2007

Debut Album Sink or Swim Released

In May 2007, The Gaslight Anthem released their debut album, Sink or Swim, through XOXO Records. The album received positive reviews from both independent music sites and more mainstream publications. The song 'I Coulda Been a Contender' gained some commercial radio play. This debut set the foundation for their signature heartland rock and punk rock influenced sound.
2008

Breakthrough with The '59 Sound

The Gaslight Anthem released their second album, The '59 Sound, on August 19, 2008, through SideOneDummy Records. Produced by Ted Hutt, the album included contributions from members of Hot Water Music and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones. This record marked their breakthrough, debuting on the US Billboard 200 and UK Albums Chart, and achieved Gold certification in the UK. The album was critically acclaimed, voted the No. 1 album of 2008 by eMusic and praised by Pitchfork Media. The band also made UK music history by appearing on the cover of Kerrang! magazine without prior coverage, and won the 2009 Kerrang! Award for Best International Newcomer. They toured extensively in the UK and Europe during this period.
2010

Album American Slang and Growing Popularity

In June 2010, The Gaslight Anthem released their third studio album, American Slang, again through SideOneDummy Records. The album reached number 16 on the US Billboard 200 and number 18 on the UK Albums Chart. It continued to develop their sound and expanded their fanbase. The title track was released as a single, finding some success in Canada. During this period, the band solidified their reputation as a prominent name in contemporary rock, with their heartfelt lyrics and energetic performances.
2012

Handwritten Released and Commercial Success

In July 2012, The Gaslight Anthem's fourth album, Handwritten, was released through Mercury Records. The lead single '45' became their highest-charting single, hitting number 11 on the US Alternative Songs chart and number 7 in Canada.
