1996

Formation of Saliva in Memphis, Tennessee

Saliva was formed in Bartlett, Tennessee, a suburb of Memphis, in September 1996. The original lineup included vocalist Josey Scott Sappington, drummer Todd Poole, bassist Dave Novotny, and guitarists Chris D'Abaldo and Wayne Swinny. The band drew members from local groups like Roxy Blue and Blackbone. Their first show was on Halloween 1996, marking the beginning of their presence in the rock scene.
1997

Early Recognition Through Grammy Showcase

Shortly after formation, Saliva recorded a demo tape which led to their selection out of 117 bands for the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences' Grammy Showcase. They won first place locally and regionally, advancing to the national finals where they placed second. This exposure earned them money, equipment, and entry tickets to the 1997 Grammy Awards, gaining attention from major record label scouts even though they had played only six concerts.
1999

Debut Album Release and Growing Popularity

In 1999, Saliva released their self-titled debut album 'Saliva' independently, which helped them develop a regional fanbase. The release was critical for establishing their style blending post-grunge and alternative metal. This period set the groundwork for their signing with a major label and preparing for broader commercial success in the following years.
2001

Breakthrough with 'Every Six Seconds' Album

Saliva's second album, 'Every Six Seconds', was released in 2001 under Island Records. The album was certified gold, marking a commercial breakthrough. It featured the single 'Click Click Boom', which became an anthem in rock and sporting events. The album’s success significantly raised the band's profile in the American rock music industry and among the general public.
2002

Success of 'Back into Your System' and Hit Single 'Always'

In 2002, Saliva released their third album 'Back into Your System', which reached No. 19 on the Billboard 200. The album's single 'Always' became one of their most successful tracks, peaking at No. 51 on the Billboard Hot 100 and reaching No. 1 on the Modern Rock Chart. This solidified Saliva's standing in mainstream rock with both commercial success and radio presence.
2005

Stabilized Popular Lineup and Continued Activity

Between 2000 and 2005, Saliva maintained their most well-known lineup consisting of Josey Scott (vocals), Wayne Swinny and Chris D'Abaldo (guitars), Dave Novotny (bass), and Paul Crosby (drums). This lineup was central to their growth and defines much of their early 2000s sound. Their music became widely used in sporting events and WWE, enhancing their cultural relevance beyond traditional music audiences.
2007

Release of 'Blood Stained Love Story' and Chart Success

Saliva released their fifth studio album 'Blood Stained Love Story' in 2007. The album matched their prior chart success by hitting No. 19 on the Billboard 200. The lead single 'Ladies and Gentlemen' peaked at No. 2 on the Mainstream Rock Chart, becoming another staple in their live performances and sporting event playlists. The band’s presence in rock media and concerts was firmly established during this time.
Awards and Nominations

Recognition and Honors

Throughout their career, Saliva has been nominated for 6 Grammy Awards and won one MTV award. Their consistent chart performances and popular singles like 'Click Click Boom' earned them critical and industry recognition. The band’s achievements in awards underscored their impact in the late 1990s and 2000s rock music scene, affirming their status among prominent American rock bands.
Cultural Impact and Legacy

Music's Role in Sports and Pop Culture

Saliva's songs have become synonymous with high-energy sports events, particularly in WWE wrestling and football games. Guitarist Wayne Swinny noted that many of their songs naturally lend themselves to sporting arenas, making tracks like 'Click Click Boom' and 'Ladies and Gentlemen' staples at these events. This cultural penetration demonstrates how Saliva's music transcended typical rock venues to become part of mainstream American entertainment culture.
