Story of ANKOR
ANKOR: Spain`s Genre-Defying Alternative Metal Powerhouse
Hailing from Catalonia, Spain, ANKOR (stylized in all caps) stands as a formidable force in the alternative metal scene. This dynamic five-piece is fronted by the captivating British vocalist and screamer Jessie Williams, whose powerful presence defines their sound. The current lineup also features the rhythmic precision of drummer Eleni Nota, the intricate guitar work and backing vocals of David Romeu and Fito Martínez, and the solid bass lines of Julio López.
History and Global Ambitions
ANKOR first ignited in 2003 in Els Pallaresos, a village near the vibrant city of Barcelona. Their early years saw them build a significant following, culminating in 2014 when the readers of La Heavy – a highly respected Spanish and South American rock magazine – crowned them "Best Newcomer Band." This recognition underscored their burgeoning talent and impact on the Iberian metal scene.
A pivotal moment arrived in 2014 with the recruitment of British vocal sensation Jessie Williams. Recognizing a perceived lack of demand for metal music within Spain, the band made a strategic pivot towards the global market, a move championed by Williams. This forward-thinking approach has allowed ANKOR to transcend geographical boundaries and connect with a worldwide audience. The band`s dedication to this global vision was solidified in 2024 with a major signing to leading Australian label UNFD, marking a new chapter with the release of their impactful debut mini-album, Shoganai – Mini Album Vol. 1.
Evolving Sound: From Power Metal to Electronic Metalcore
ANKOR`s musical journey is a testament to their continuous evolution. While they initially forged their path in the melodic realms of power metal, their sound has since metamorphosed into a compelling blend of modern alternative metal, infused with aggressive metalcore breakdowns and innovative electronic music elements. This genre-bending approach crafts a unique sonic identity that appeals to a diverse spectrum of heavy music enthusiasts.
Vocalist Jessie Williams has candidly spoken about their wide-ranging influences in an interview with The Pretty Cult, citing the profound impact of Japanese culture on their artistry. Musically, the band draws inspiration from contemporary titans like Falling in Reverse and the eclectic energy of Japanese heavyweights Maximum the Hormone. Further enriching their sonic tapestry, ANKOR fearlessly incorporates elements from unexpected genres, including the rhythmic drive of hip-hop and the intricate arrangements of classical music, demonstrating a boundless creativity that defies categorization.
