Story of Dance Gavin Dance

Dance Gavin Dance: A Sacramento Post-Hardcore Saga of Ever-Evolving Sound

Hailing from Sacramento, California, Dance Gavin Dance stands as an iconic force in American rock, exploding onto the scene in 2005. Celebrated for their intricate post-hardcore and experimental rock sound, the band`s identity is defined by its dynamic dual-vocal attack and virtuoso musicianship.

The current formidable lineup features lead guitarist Will Swan, the rhythmic backbone drummer Matthew Mingus, the signature harsh vocalist Jon Mess, and the melodic stylings of lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Andrew Wells. While this lineup defines their present, Dance Gavin Dance is famously known for its "revolving door" of talent, particularly in the vocal department. Notable former lead vocalists include the influential Jonny Craig, the distinct Kurt Travis, and the fan-favorite Tilian Pearson. Through all the shifts, Will Swan and Matthew Mingus remain the band`s unwavering anchors, being the sole members to contribute to every single studio album.

Their journey began with the 2006 debut extended play (EP), Whatever I Say Is Royal Ocean, which quickly earned them a signing with Rise Records. The band’s groundbreaking debut studio album, Downtown Battle Mountain, dropped in May 2007, solidifying their unique sound. This pivotal release was soon followed by significant lineup adjustments; Jonny Craig and guitarist Sean O`Sullivan exited, making way for Kurt Travis on lead vocals and Zachary Garren on guitar.

The newly configured group unleashed their self-titled sophomore effort, Dance Gavin Dance, in August 2008. Prior to its release, a further shake-up saw harsh vocalist Jon Mess and bassist Eric Lodge initially depart the group, with Jason Ellis stepping in on bass. Despite these changes, the band pressed on, delivering their third studio album, Happiness, in June 2009, continuing to carve their niche in the progressive rock and math rock landscape.
