History
Foundation and Early Years (2015–2017)
The Thornhill story began organically in 2015, rooted in the suburban Melbourne high-school scene at Vermont Secondary College. Founding members Jacob Charlton, Ben Maida, Sam Anderson, and Ethan McCann first honed their craft through local Battle of the Bands competitions, laying the groundwork for their distinctive heavy sound.
Their formal journey into the Australian heavy music scene commenced in 2016 with the release of their debut single, "XY," on June 2nd, notably featuring Jack Bergin of fellow metalcore heavyweights Void of Vision. This collaboration immediately signaled their presence. Just months later, in August 2016, Thornhill unveiled their debut EP, 13, a raw yet promising collection. This was followed by the self-released single "Temperer" in May 2017, further solidifying their early sonic identity.
The positive critical reception to 13 and "Temperer" quickly propelled Thornhill onto the national touring circuit. They cut their teeth supporting established Australian metal acts such as Void of Vision and Hellions, gaining invaluable live experience. A pivotal moment arrived in 2017 when they triumphed in a prestigious Triple J Unearthed competition, earning the coveted support slot for British metal giants Architects on their Australian tour. This significant exposure, coupled with consistent airplay on Triple J Radio (including the influential Home and Hosed segment), dramatically boosted their profile. The band capitalized on this momentum, subsequently touring alongside prominent acts like Alpha Wolf, The Brave, Graves, and even one of their acknowledged early influences, the pioneering progressive metalcore outfit Northlane, all within the packed year of 2017. Their upward trajectory continued with the release of the dynamic single "Limbo" on August 15th, 2017, cementing their status as an emerging force in modern Australian metal.
