SiM (Silence iz Mine), formed in Shonan, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan in November 2004, are a genre-bending force in alternative metal. The band—MAH (vocals), SHOW-HATE (guitar), SIN (bass), and GODRi (drums)—masterfully blends heavy metal with alternative, hip-hop, ska, reggae, dub, and punk influences. Their aggressive sound is punctuated by rebellious, primarily English lyrics and a distinctly defiant attitude.
Since signing with Pony Canyon in 2022, SiM have achieved significant international recognition. Their single, "The Rumbling," the opening theme for Attack on Titan: The Final Season Part 2, topped the US Billboard Hot Hard Rock Songs chart, further solidifying their status. The track also placed impressively on other Billboard charts, including the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles (#5), Hard Rock Digital Song Sales (#2), and Hot Rock & Alternative Songs (#13). Their impact extends beyond just the charts; their music is a powerful statement, making SiM a major player in the global alternative metal scene.
CKY: A Rock Band With a Story
CKY, an acronym for "Camp Kill Yourself," is an American rock band hailing from West Chester, Pennsylvania. Formed in 1998 by vocalist and guitarist Deron Miller, guitarist Chad I Ginsburg, and drummer Jess Margera, the group currently features Margera, Ginsburg, and bassist Ronnie Elvis James.
CKY initially gained recognition through their contributions to the "CKY Video" series and the popular MTV show "Jackass," both featuring Margera's brother, Bam.
After the release of their debut album "Volume 1" in 1999, CKY signed with Island/Def Jam and released "Infiltrate Destroy Rebuild" in 2002, earning the band their first US chart success. "An Answer Can Be Found" followed in 2005, leading the group to sign with Roadrunner Records and release "Carver City" in 2009.
In 2011, Miller left the band, leaving Ginsburg, Margera, and bassist Matt Deis to release "The Phoenix" on Entertainment One Music in 2017.
CKY has been categorized across various genres, including alternative rock/metal, post-grunge, stoner rock, and hard rock. Their songwriting was typically led by Miller, while Ginsburg handled production, engineering, and mixing. Following Miller's departure, Ginsburg took over as frontman.
Miller later reformed his pre-CKY group Foreign Objects (which originally included Margera) and founded 96 Bitter Beings, a continuation of the style he previously played with CKY.
History
1998-2001: Formation and Early Releases
Deron Miller and Jess Margera met in high school in 1992 and formed the band Foreign Objects, releasing "The Undiscovered Numbers & Colors" in 1995.
The band changed their name to CKY, and their unique blend of humor, heavy riffs, and dark lyrical themes resonated with fans, particularly after their appearances in the "CKY Video" series.
Hailing from Blackpool, Lancashire, Boston Manor emerged onto the UK rock scene in March 2013. Initially self-releasing their debut EP, Here/Now, via Bandcamp`s Never Mend Records, the band quickly gained traction. Their subsequent signing with Failure By Design Records in 2014 for their Driftwood EP cemented their upward trajectory. A pivotal moment arrived in 2015 with their signing to Pure Noise Records, a partnership that yielded the Saudade EP and three critically acclaimed full-length albums: Be Nothing (2016), Welcome to the Neighbourhood (2018), and Glue (2020).
Boston Manor`s sound is a potent blend of emotive intensity and heavier, riff-driven textures, drawing comparisons to 90s grunge and early 2000s post-hardcore. This distinctive style earned them a Kerrang! Awards nomination for Best British Breakthrough in 2018, and Welcome to the Neighbourhood received a nod for Best Album Artwork at the Heavy Music Awards in 2019.
The bands Blackpool origins, as vocalist Henry Cox notes, presented unique challenges: "There isn
t much of a music scene in Blackpool," he stated. "We had a little stab at reinvigorating it. When we were 16, 17, 18, we were playing shows with different bands." This early experience clearly fueled their determination and contributed to their eventual success.
Green Day: From Bay Area Punk to Global Rock Icons
Green Day, the undisputed kings of pop-punk, emerged from the vibrant Bay Area punk scene of the late 80s. Founded in 1987 by the dynamic duo of Billie Joe Armstrong (vocals, guitar) and Mike Dirnt (bass, backing vocals), the band initially went by the names Blood Rage and Sweet Children before settling on Green Day in 1989. They quickly became fixtures at the legendary 924 Gilman Street club in Berkeley, a hotbed for the burgeoning punk movement.
Their early recordings, released through Lookout! Records, showcased their raw energy and catchy melodies. Their debut album, 39/Smooth (1990), established their raw talent and laid the groundwork for their future success. The arrival of drummer Tré Cool in 1990, replacing John Kiffmeyer, solidified their classic power trio lineup.
The game-changer arrived in 1994 with Dookie, their major label debut on Reprise Records. The album exploded, selling over 10 million copies in the U.S. alone, and propelled Green Day into the mainstream. They became synonymous with the punk revival alongside fellow California bands like Bad Religion, the Offspring, Rancid, NOFX, Pennywise, and Social Distortion.
Dookie cemented their status as rock stars, but Green Day continued to push boundaries. Insomniac (1995), Nimrod (1997), and Warning (2000) all achieved significant success, though they didn't quite match the phenomenal heights of Dookie.
Their seventh album, American Idiot (2004), marked a new chapter. This ambitious rock opera resonated deeply with a younger generation, selling six million copies in the U.S. and solidifying their status as a true rock force.
Green Day's momentum continued with 21st Century Breakdown (2009), their most commercially successful album to date, boasting their best chart performance ever. The band then embarked on a bold experiment with the ¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, ¡Tré! trilogy (2012), a three-part album release. While the trilogy didn't quite reach the commercial heights of their previous efforts, it solidified their enduring creative spirit.
Green Day's journey has been one of constant evolution. From their humble beginnings in the Bay Area punk scene to their global domination as rock icons, they have consistently delivered catchy tunes, powerful lyrics, and unforgettable live shows. They remain a force to be reckoned with, continuously inspiring new generations of musicians and fans alike.
Within Temptation, the Dutch symphonic metal titans, emerged from the ashes of April 1996, forged by vocalist Sharon den Adel and guitarist Robert Westerholt. While often categorized as gothic and symphonic metal, their sound defies easy genre classification, showcasing a remarkable versatility and experimental spirit across their discography. Den Adel herself has described their music as atmospheric melodic symphonic metal/rock, acknowledging gothic elements while rejecting a purely gothic label.
Their 1997 debut, Enter, initially established them within the Dutch underground. However, it was their 2001 single "Ice Queen" from Mother Earth that catapulted them into the mainstream, reaching #2 on the Dutch charts. This success marked the beginning of their phenomenal run, culminating in an unprecedented five Conamus Exportprijs awards (four consecutive wins, and a fifth in 2016), solidifying their status as Dutch music royalty.
Starset, the Columbus, Ohio-based rock band, exploded onto the scene in 2013, the brainchild of Dustin Bates. Their debut album, Transmissions (2014), marked the beginning of their unique approach – crafting concept albums and expanding their narrative through innovative multimedia strategies. This savvy use of social media and YouTube generated significant revenue, exceeding $230,000 in YouTube ad revenue alone by November 2016, a testament to their engaged fanbase. Their breakout single, "My Demons," amassed over 280 million YouTube views during the same period.
The bands ascent continued with *Vessels* (2017), featuring the commercially successful track "Monster," which climbed to #2 on the US Billboard Mainstream Rock chart in May 2017. Further solidifying their position in the rock landscape, they released *Divisions* in 2019 and *Horizons* in 2021, consistently building upon their signature blend of cinematic soundscapes and intricate storytelling. Bates, the band
s lead vocalist, songwriter, and keyboardist, draws inspiration from his background in electrical engineering, research for the US Air Force, teaching at the International Space University, and a fascination with astronomy, all woven into the rich fictional lore that underpins Starset`s musical universe.
The Dublin-based band The Scratch are pioneers of a unique sound, forging a potent fusion of Irish traditional music and heavy metal. Born from the ashes of Perrystown heavy metal act Red Enemy (three of whose members form The Scratch`s core), the band exploded onto the scene in 2016.
Their debut album, *Couldnt Give a Rats*, dropped in 2020, laying the groundwork for their critically acclaimed sophomore effort, *Mind Yourself*, released in 2023. The latter earned a coveted nomination for the Choice Music Prize, solidifying The Scratch
s position as a major force in the Irish music landscape.
Hailing from Blacktown, Australia, Northlane emerged in 2009 as a metalcore powerhouse. The current lineup features Jon Deiley and Josh Smith on guitars, Nic Pettersen on drums, and vocalist Marcus Bridge. This formidable quartet has crafted a formidable discography, releasing six studio albums: Discoveries (2011), Singularity (2013) – which peaked at #3 on the ARIA Albums Chart – the chart-topping Node (2015), Mesmer (2017), Alien (2019), and Obsidian (2022). Their dominance in the Australian metal scene is undeniable, evidenced by their three ARIA Music Awards for Best Hard Rock or Heavy Metal Album, won for Node (2015), Mesmer (2017), and Alien (2019).
Early Years and Lineup Changes:
Initially formed in 2009, Northlanes original lineup included Jon Deiley (lead guitar), Brendan Derby (drums/percussion), Adrian Fitipaldes (lead vocals), Alex Milovic (bass), and Josh Smith (rhythm guitar). The band
s name is a tribute to Architects 2007 track, "North Lane." Fitipaldes later recounted their formation as a largely internet-driven collaboration, with Deiley and Milovic initiating contact to begin songwriting. The band
s current success showcases a journey of evolution and relentless creativity within the metalcore genre.
Opeth, the seminal Swedish progressive metal band from Stockholm, emerged in 1990. Their sound is a masterful blend of progressive metal, death metal (particularly prominent in their early work), folk, blues, classical, and jazz influences. This eclectic mix is woven into epic compositions characterized by acoustic guitar passages, Mellotron textures, harsh death growls, and dramatic dynamic shifts.
The band`s history is marked by significant personnel changes; every original member has since departed. However, Mikael Ã…kerfeldt, the lead vocalist, guitarist, and primary songwriter, has remained the creative force since the departure of founder David Isberg in 1992. Initially, Opeth played live shows sparingly, but following their 2001 breakthrough album Blackwater Park, they embarked on numerous world tours, cementing their status as a major live act.
Opeth boasts an extensive discography: fourteen studio albums, four live DVDs, four live albums (three paired with DVDs), and two box sets. Their debut, Orchid, dropped in 1995. The band achieved significant international chart success with Ghost Reveries (2005), cracking the Top Ten in Sweden and charting in numerous other countries. Their subsequent album, Watershed (2008), debuted at number one in Finland and reached a respectable #23 on the US Billboard 200. Their impact on progressive metal and the wider metal scene remains undeniable.
Currents, the Connecticut metalcore quintet, emerged from Newtown in 2011, founded by drummer Jeff Brown. While the lineup has undergone significant turnover—no original members remain since 2018—the current iteration features vocalist Brian Wille, guitarists Ryan Castaldi and Chris Wiseman (also a founding guitarist of Shadow of Intent), bassist/backing vocalist Christian Pulgarin, and drummer Matt Young.
Their journey began with the independently released Victimized EP in January 2013. Two years later, they followed up with the Life // Lost EP, featuring a guest appearance by Ricky Armellino of This or the Apocalypse. A pivotal moment arrived in March 2017 when Currents signed with SharpTone Records. This led to the release of their debut full-length, The Place I Feel Safest, in June 2017, followed by an instrumental version in May 2018. SharpTone also released their I Let the Devil In EP, including an instrumental version, in December 2018. Their critically acclaimed second album, The Way It Ends, dropped via SharpTone in June 2020, solidifying their place in the metalcore scene.
Jimmy Eat World: From Mesa to the Mainstream
Hailing from the desert heat of Mesa, Arizona, Jimmy Eat World emerged in 1993 with a raw, energetic sound that quickly captured the hearts of alternative rock fans. The band – featuring the songwriting duo of Jim Adkins (lead vocals, guitar) and Tom Linton (rhythm guitar, backing vocals), along with bassist Rick Burch and drummer Zach Lind – have remained a tight-knit unit, their consistency reflected in the nine studio albums they've released together.
The band's breakout moment came with their 2001 release, Bleed American. This album was a veritable hit machine, spawning four top-20 singles on the Alternative Songs chart, including the iconic "The Middle" which soared to the No. 1 position. Their momentum continued with Futures (2004), which boasted the chart-topping single "Pain" and solidified their place as a major force in the rock scene.
The RIAA recognized the immense success of Bleed American with a platinum certification, while Futures achieved gold status, reflecting combined sales exceeding 1.5 million units. The band continued to climb the charts with their sixth LP, Chase This Light (2007), which peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard 200, becoming their highest-charting album to date.
Jimmy Eat World's story is one of unwavering dedication and an ability to connect with audiences through their passionate and relatable songwriting. From the desert heat of their beginnings to the pinnacle of the rock charts, they've carved their own path and left an enduring mark on the music world.
Hailing from Sydney, Australia, Polaris exploded onto the metalcore scene with a sound that transcends genre limitations. This powerhouse quartet – vocalist Jamie Hails, guitarist Rick Schneider, bassist/vocalist Jake Steinhauser, and drummer Daniel Furnari – quickly garnered attention. Their debut album, The Mortal Coil (November 3, 2017), earned critical praise and a 2018 ARIA Award nomination for Best Hard Rock. Building on this success, their sophomore effort, The Death of Me (February 21, 2020, Resist/SharpTone Records), yielded another ARIA nomination, solidifying their position as a force to be reckoned with.
Tragically, the band suffered a devastating loss in June 2023 with the passing of lead guitarist Ryan Siew. The announcement of their third studio album, Fatalism, was overshadowed by this heartbreaking news.
Polaris`s distinctive sound blends the intensity of metalcore with progressive and ambient elements, incorporating electronic textures and memorable melodic hooks. Their deeply personal lyrics explore themes of anxiety, depression, and loss, resonating with a generation grappling with similar experiences.
History:
Formed in 2012, Polaris’s genesis traces back to a high school battle of the bands, where drummer Daniel Furnari and guitarist Jake Steinhauser discovered a shared passion for metal and alternative music. Their initial lineup included vocalist Josh OLoughlin. Through mutual friends, they recruited guitarist Rick Schneider and vocalist Jamie Hails. Completing the early lineup were Jake
s brother, Matt Steinhauser on bass, and James West on synth/keys, laying the foundation for the band`s future evolution.
Hailing from Lowestoft, England, The Darkness exploded onto the hard rock scene in 2000. The lineup, fronted by the flamboyant Justin Hawkins (vocals, guitar) alongside his brother Dan Hawkins (guitar), Frankie Poullain (bass), and Rufus Tiger Taylor (drums), quickly gained notoriety. Their 2003 debut, Permission to Land, became a phenomenon, fueled by anthemic singles like "I Believe in a Thing Called Love," "Growing on Me," "Get Your Hands off My Woman," and "Love Is Only a Feeling." The album achieved quadruple platinum certification in the UK, selling over 1.3 million copies. This success translated into three Brit Awards in 2004: Best British Group, Best British Rock Act, and Best British Album.
However, the whirlwind success took its toll. Extensive touring led to bassist Frankie Poullains departure in 2005, replaced by Richie Edwards. Their follow-up album, *One Way Ticket to Hell... and Back*, released in November 2005, failed to replicate the debut
s success. Further compounding matters, Justin Hawkins struggles with alcohol and cocaine abuse culminated in his departure the following year after completing rehab. This, combined with the album
s disappointing sales, resulted in Atlantic Records dropping the band in October 2006. The Darkness` story is a classic tale of meteoric rise, internal struggles, and the volatile nature of the music industry.
Dirty Honey: A Rock 'n' Roll Story
Dirty Honey, hailing from the heart of Los Angeles, emerged onto the scene in 2017, quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with in the contemporary rock landscape. This four-piece powerhouse comprises lead vocalist Marc LaBelle, guitarist John Notto, bassist Justin Smolian, and drummer Jaydon Bean (who replaced Corey Coverstone in 2021).
Their self-titled EP, released in March 2019, showcased their raw talent and ignited a buzz within the rock community. The band's breakout single, "When I'm Gone," stormed the Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs chart, achieving a feat previously unmatched by any unsigned act. This success earned Dirty Honey the prestigious "On the Verge" Artist title from iHeartRadio, solidifying their status as a rising force in the music industry.
From Ground Zero to Dirty Honey:
The band's journey began when guitarist John Notto, aiming to capture the magic of Guns N' Roses, landed in Los Angeles. It was there that he crossed paths with vocalist Marc LaBelle, who was then performing with the group Ground Zero. Notto, impressed by LaBelle's talents, joined the band, adding his own distinct guitar flair to their repertoire.
LaBelle and Notto's shared vision soon led them to form their own band. They brought in Justin Smolian, who had joined Ground Zero as bassist. The trio's quest for a drummer proved challenging, but Smolian introduced Corey Coverstone, who eagerly joined their ranks. With Coverstone's addition, the band solidified their name as "Dirty Honey," leaving behind their former moniker, "The Shags."
Dirty Honey's story is one of passion, perseverance, and undeniable talent. Their self-made success and signature hard-hitting sound have catapulted them into the spotlight, solidifying their place as a major contender in the modern rock scene.
The Sex Pistols: A Punk Revolution
The Sex Pistols, formed in the grimy underbelly of London in 1975, were more than just a band – they were a cultural earthquake. Their blistering, two-and-a-half-year existence ignited the punk movement in the UK, leaving an indelible mark on music history.
Their initial lineup, a raw and rebellious quartet, featured the snarling vocals of Johnny Rotten (John Lydon), the razor-sharp guitar of Steve Jones, the relentless rhythm of drummer Paul Cook, and the melodic bass lines of Glen Matlock. The latter was replaced by the infamous Sid Vicious (John Richie) in 1977, adding an element of chaos that became synonymous with the band.
Under the guidance of the enigmatic Malcolm McLaren, the Pistols embraced controversy. Their infamous TV interview, riddled with obscenities, shocked the nation, catapulting them into the spotlight. Their anthem, "God Save the Queen," released during the Queen's Silver Jubilee, was a scathing critique of the monarchy, branded "fascist" by the band. The song's immediate ban by the BBC and nearly every radio station in Britain cemented its place as the most censored record in UK history.
Their debut album, Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols, released in 1977, reached the top of the UK charts, solidifying their status as punk rock pioneers. The album's raw energy and defiant lyrics became a soundtrack for a generation disillusioned with the establishment.
Despite their meteoric rise, the band's internal tensions simmered. In January 1978, at the end of a tumultuous US tour, Rotten famously declared the band's demise on stage. The remaining members continued to record for McLaren's film, The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle, documenting their tumultuous journey.
The Sex Pistols' impact goes beyond their music. Their ripped clothes, safety pin jewelry, and mohawks became iconic symbols of the punk aesthetic, inspiring countless artists and shaping a generation's look and attitude. Their rebellious spirit and confrontational style continue to resonate today, proving the Sex Pistols' enduring legacy as the architects of a punk revolution.
Weezer: The Story of the California Rock Icons
Born in the sun-drenched streets of Los Angeles in 1992, Weezer burst onto the scene with an infectious blend of power pop and alt-rock. The band's core lineup, cemented in 2001, features the songwriting mastermind Rivers Cuomo (vocals, guitar), the rhythmic powerhouse Patrick Wilson (drums), the melodically gifted Brian Bell (guitar), and the steady bassist Scott Shriner. Together, they've sold millions of records worldwide, cementing their status as rock royalty.
Their 1994 debut, affectionately dubbed the "Blue Album," catapulted them into the spotlight. With a string of anthemic singles like "Buddy Holly," "Undone – The Sweater Song," and "Say It Ain't So," the album went multi-platinum and solidified their place in music history.
However, Weezer weren't content to rest on their laurels. Their 1996 follow-up, "Pinkerton," took a decidedly darker turn, showcasing a raw, abrasive sound that initially alienated some listeners. Yet, this bold experiment, though commercially unsuccessful at the time, eventually earned its rightful place as a cult classic and a critical masterpiece.
Following a brief hiatus after "Pinkerton," Weezer returned with a renewed focus on accessible pop sensibilities in their 2001 release, "The Green Album." The singles "Hash Pipe" and "Island in the Sun" captured the hearts of fans, revitalizing their commercial success and garnering widespread critical acclaim.
Both the "Blue Album" and "Pinkerton" are now considered cornerstones of 90s rock, a testament to Weezer's ability to push boundaries and consistently deliver memorable music that continues to resonate with fans across generations.
Eagles of Death Metal: A Rock & Roll Story
Eagles of Death Metal, hailing from the desert haven of Palm Desert, California, emerged onto the music scene in 1998. Founded by the dynamic duo of Jesse Hughes (vocals, guitar) and Josh Homme (drums), the band boasts a revolving cast of talented musicians who contribute both to their studio albums and electrifying live performances. While Hughes and Homme remain the band's core, Homme's busy schedule with his other project, Queens of the Stone Age, limits his live appearances.
The band's current touring lineup features Hughes alongside a formidable crew: Leah Bluestein on drums, Scott Shiflett on guitar, Jennie Vee on bass, and Rex Roulette on guitar.
Despite their name, Eagles of Death Metal are anything but a death metal band. Their moniker, a playful twist on the iconic Eagles, is a testament to their tongue-in-cheek humor. Homme described their sound in a 2003 interview as a unique blend of "bluegrass slide guitar mixed with stripper drum beats and Canned Heat vocals."
Hughes, renowned for his captivating stage presence, is known for his energetic interaction with audiences, creating an infectious energy at their shows.
Name Origins: A Story of Humor and Misunderstanding
The band's name has been the subject of various, often conflicting, explanations, all centered around the humorous concept of a death metal version of the Eagles.
One story, as told by Hughes in a video interview, recounts a night when he and Homme were in a London bar witnessing a man dancing to "Wind of Change" by the Scorpions. When asked about his dance moves, the man declared, "This is death metal, dude!" Homme's reply, a humorous counterpoint, was "No, it's not. It's like the Eagles of death metal."
Another version claims the name originated from an exchange between Homme and a friend who was attempting to convert Hughes to the death metal genre.
Regardless of the precise origin, the name Eagles of Death Metal has become synonymous with their unique brand of rock and roll, a sound infused with blues, rockabilly, and a healthy dose of humor.
Rise Against: A Punk Rock Anthem for the Ages
Hailing from the concrete jungle of Chicago, Rise Against emerged in 1999, spitting fire and fury. This ain't your average punk band, though. They're steeped in the raw energy of hardcore, but with a melodic twist that'll get stuck in your head like a broken record. Think blistering guitars, ferocious drums, and vocals that scream about injustice.
Their early days were spent cutting their teeth on the independent label Fat Wreck Chords, where their albums The Unraveling (2001) and Revolutions per Minute (2003) built a loyal following in the underground scene. But Rise Against wasn't content with just the back alleys. They signed with Dreamworks in 2003, and with Siren Song of the Counter Culture (2004), they broke through to the mainstream. Tracks like "Give It All" and "Swing Life Away" became anthems for a generation yearning for change.
Their next album, The Sufferer & the Witness (2006), solidified their status. It hit the top ten on the Billboard 200 and conquered charts worldwide, proving they were more than just a flash in the pan.
With Appeal to Reason (2008), they upped the ante, pushing their sound towards a more polished and radio-friendly direction. The album's powerhouse track, "Savior," shattered records, dominating the airwaves and proving their staying power.
Rise Against aren't just about the music, though. They're vocal activists, using their platform to speak out against injustice, championing animal rights, and advocating for a greener planet. They're not afraid to ruffle feathers, and they've become a voice for those who feel unheard.
Rise Against, more than just a band, they're a movement. A punk rock revolution for a better tomorrow.
Jinjer: A Ukrainian Metalcore Force to Be Reckoned With
Hailing from the gritty heart of Donetsk, Ukraine, Jinjer exploded onto the metal scene in 2009, leaving behind their initial 2008 formation. While the original lineup's four-song EP, "Objects in Mirror Are Closer than They Appear," set the stage, it was the arrival of powerhouse vocalist Tatiana Shmayluk and guitarist Roman Ibramkhalilov that truly ignited the band's potential.
This dynamic duo joined forces with bassist Eugene Abdukhanov and drummer Vladislav Ulasevich, solidifying the lineup that continues to dominate the metalcore landscape. This revamped Jinjer, fueled by a relentless touring schedule and self-funded efforts, unleashed their ferocious energy on the world, culminating in their latest masterpiece, "Wallflowers," released in August 2021.
A Brief History:
- 2008: Jinjer emerges with a lineup consisting of Maksym Fatullaiev (vocals), Dmitriy Oksen (guitar), Oleksiy Svynar (bass), and Vyacheslav Okhrimenko (drums). This incarnation delivers the EP, "Objects in Mirror Are Closer than They Appear," setting the groundwork for what would become Jinjer's unique sound.
- 2009: The band undergoes a pivotal shift. Fatullaiev exits, replaced by the explosive force of Tatiana Shmayluk, while Roman Ibramkhalilov joins as the second guitarist. This lineup, considered the band's official beginning, marks a defining moment in their evolution.
- 2011: Jinjer continues to refine their sound and lineup. Oleksiy Svynar makes way for bassist Eugene Abdukhanov, and Vyacheslav Okhrimenko is replaced by Oleksandr Koziychuk on drums.
- 2012: This solidified lineup self-releases the EP "Inhale, Do Not Breathe," showcasing their raw power and setting the stage for their ascent to international recognition.
Jinjer's history is a testament to the band's resilience, dedication, and commitment to pushing the boundaries of metalcore. Their electrifying live performances and captivating music continue to draw fans worldwide, solidifying their position as a leading force in the global metal scene.
Meshuggah: The Architects of Modern Metal
Hailing from the frigid north of Umeå, Sweden, Meshuggah emerged in 1987 as a force to be reckoned with in the extreme metal scene. Since 2004, the band's core has remained steadfast, with founding members Jens Kidman (vocals, a growling beast) and Fredrik Thordendal (lead guitar, a shredding master) joined by rhythm guitarist Mårten Hagström, drummer Tomas Haake (a polyrhythmic powerhouse), and bassist Dick Lövgren.
Their sonic legacy is one of sheer innovation. Meshuggah's nine studio albums, six EPs, and eight music videos stand as testament to their relentless pursuit of pushing boundaries. Their latest offering, "Immutable" (released in April 2022 via Atomic Fire Records), cements their status as pioneers.
Their signature sound, characterized by complex polyrhythms, intricate polymeters, and crushing heaviness, has earned them a loyal following and influenced a generation of musicians. They've risen from the underground to become a force to be reckoned with, earning accolades from giants like Rolling Stone (listing them among the ten most important hard rock/heavy metal bands) and Alternative Press (dubbing them the most influential metal band). In the late 2000s, their influence helped birth the djent subgenre, a testament to their enduring impact.
Meshuggah's musical prowess has also garnered recognition from the industry. They were nominated for two Swedish Grammis Awards (in 2006 for "Catch Thirtythree" and 2009 for "obZen") and, in 2018, achieved the ultimate accolade – a Grammy nomination for their song "Clockworks" in the "Best Metal Performance" category.
Meshuggah's story is a testament to the power of innovation, pushing the boundaries of music and leaving an undeniable mark on the world of metal. They are more than just a band; they are a sonic force that continues to inspire and challenge.
Shinedown: A Rock Band Built on Grit and Hard-Hitting Anthems
Shinedown, the American rock powerhouse hailing from Jacksonville, Florida, burst onto the scene in 2001, the brainchild of charismatic vocalist Brent Smith. After his previous band, Dreve, was dropped by Atlantic Records, Smith, under contract with the label, knew he had to forge a new path. He assembled a core lineup – Jasin Todd on guitar, Brad Stewart on bass, and Barry Kerch on drums – and began crafting their signature sound.
The band's early days saw a consistent lineup for their first two albums, but like many bands navigating the industry, lineup changes became a fact of life. The late 2000s saw a series of shifts, ultimately solidifying a new lineup featuring Smith, Kerch, Zach Myers on guitar, and Eric Bass on bass. This powerhouse quartet has become a mainstay in the rock world.
Since their debut, Shinedown has released seven studio albums: "Leave a Whisper" (2003), "Us and Them" (2005), "The Sound of Madness" (2008), "Amaryllis" (2012), "Threat to Survival" (2015), "Attention Attention" (2018), and "Planet Zero" (2022). These albums have consistently delivered hard-hitting anthems, showcasing their signature blend of raw emotion and powerful rock.
Shinedown’s impact extends beyond critical acclaim. The band holds the record for the most number-one singles on the Billboard Mainstream Rock charts, boasting a staggering 19 chart-toppers. All of their released singles have cracked the top five, cementing their place as a force to be reckoned with. On June 3, 2021, Billboard recognized their undeniable influence by ranking them #1 on the Greatest of All Time Mainstream Rock Artists chart, a testament to their enduring legacy.
With over 10 million records sold worldwide, Shinedown has undeniably carved a lasting impression on the rock scene. Their raw energy, emotional depth, and electrifying live performances have earned them legions of loyal fans who continue to rock out to their anthems.
Early Days: From Dreve to Shinedown
Smith's journey with Shinedown began with the dissolution of his previous band, Dreve. While they had signed with Atlantic Records, the label ultimately decided to part ways with the band before releasing an album, believing Smith had the potential to succeed as a solo artist. Recognizing his talent, Atlantic Records signed Smith to a development deal, providing him with support to hone his songwriting abilities and assemble a new band. This marked the genesis of Shinedown, a band poised to make its own mark on the world.
Korn: Pioneers of Nu Metal Fury
Korn, known for their distinctive, stylized name "KoЯn," exploded onto the music scene from Bakersfield, California in 1993, becoming the undisputed pioneers of the nu metal genre.
Born from the ashes of L.A.P.D., the band's core lineup features founding members:
- Jonathan Davis: The haunting, guttural vocals that define Korn's sound.
- James "Munky" Shaffer: Mastermind behind the band's signature riffs and powerful guitar work.
- Reginald "Fieldy" Arvizu: Laying down the heavy foundation with his ferocious bass lines.

Their debut album, aptly titled "Korn," dropped in 1994, laying the groundwork for the band's rise to fame. "Life Is Peachy," their 1996 masterpiece, cemented their place in the music world, but it was "Follow the Leader" and "Issues" (released in 1998 and 1999 respectively) that catapulted them to mainstream success. Both albums stormed the charts, hitting number one on the Billboard 200, solidifying their dominance over the nu metal scene.
The band's reign continued with the release of "Untouchables" (2002), "Take a Look in the Mirror" (2003), and "See You on the Other Side" (2005), consistently delivering heavy, thought-provoking music that resonated with fans worldwide.
"Greatest Hits Vol. 1," released in 2004, served as a testament to their decade-long reign, marking the end of their contract with Immortal Records and Epic Records. They later signed with Virgin Records, releasing "See You on the Other Side" and an untitled album in 2007, further proving their endurance and artistic evolution.

Initially formed as Kropp Circle by brothers Remington Leith (vocals), Sebastian Danzig (guitar/keyboards), and Emerson Barrett (drums), the trio honed their skills in their early years.
