Story of Fozzy
Fozzy stands as a powerhouse American heavy metal band, forging a distinct sonic path since its inception in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1999. Co-founded by prolific lead guitarist Rich Ward (also known for Stuck Mojo) and drummer Frank Fontsere, the band has evolved into a formidable unit. The current lineup boasts the charismatic frontman Chris Jericho on vocals, the relentless fretwork of Ward, rhythm guitarist Billy Grey, the thunderous bass of P. J. Farley, and the dynamic drumming of Grant Brooks.
Vocalist Chris Jericho famously encapsulates the band`s unique sound, declaring, "If Metallica and Journey had a bastard child, it would be Fozzy." This potent blend of crushing heavy metal riffs and arena-rock anthems defines their signature style. As of September 2022, Fozzy has solidified its legacy with a robust discography featuring eight studio albums and one explosive live album. While their initial two releases leaned heavily into cover songs with sprinkles of original material, subsequent albums have firmly established Fozzy as a dominant force of original, hard-hitting rock and metal anthems.
== History ==
=== Formation (1999–2000) === The genesis of Fozzy can be traced back to "Fozzy Osbourne," a clever homage to the legendary metal icon Ozzy Osbourne. This early iteration was primarily a cover band, initially a loose collective assembled by Rich Ward with whatever talented musicians were available from week to week. A pivotal moment arrived in 1999 when Ward and then-professional wrestling superstar Chris Jericho met in San Antonio, Texas, following a wrestling show. Jericho, an avid music enthusiast, was extended an invitation to jam with Ward`s project.
Their inaugural performance as Fozzy Osbourne took place at "The Hangar," a now-defunct club nestled in the downtown square of Marietta, Georgia. Jerichos initial involvement was casual, sitting in on a few sessions without plans for a permanent role. However, by 2000, the chemistry proved undeniable. Jericho officially rejoined the band, stepping into the spotlight as its undisputed frontman under the enigmatic persona of "Moongoose McQueen." This distinct alter ego was a cornerstone of the bands early branding and "gimmick," with Jericho famously refusing to acknowledge any connection between Moongoose McQueen and his celebrated wrestling identity. With their frontman locked in, the newly solidified Fozzy embarked on its first tours, ready to unleash their unique brand of metal upon the world.
