Band Timeline

1993

Formation of the band under the name Inearthed

Children of Bodom was originally formed in 1993 in Espoo, Finland by guitarist Alexi Laiho and drummer Jaska Raatikainen. The band started under the name Inearthed, with bassist Samuli Miettinen completing the initial lineup. The early music reflected a strong influence from death metal and classic heavy metal bands that inspired Laiho and Raatikainen during their youth. They recorded their first demo, Implosion of Heaven, the same year, marking the beginning of their journey in the metal music scene.
1995

Lineup changes and introduction of keyboards

In 1995, Samuli Miettinen, the original bassist and lyricist, left the band due to his family's move to the United States. His departure led to changes in the lineup, with Henkka 'Blacksmith' Seppälä taking over bass duties in early 1996. Around this time, the band also incorporated a keyboard element into their music for the first time, with Laiho and Raatikainen handling the keyboard recordings themselves initially. A new keyboardist, Jani Pirisjoki, was briefly part of the band before being replaced by jazz pianist Janne Wirman. Alexander Kuoppala joined as rhythm guitarist, completing a crucial step towards the band's evolving sound.
1997

Change of band name to Children of Bodom and first album release

Due to contractual obligations, the band changed their name from Inearthed to Children of Bodom in 1997. The name was inspired by Lake Bodom, near their hometown, which is known for a famous unsolved murder case. This change coincided with their signing to Spinefarm Records. The band released their debut album, Something Wild, in 1997, which showcased their blend of melodic death metal with neoclassical influences and established their unique identity in the metal scene.
1999

Release of second studio album, Hatebreeder

Children of Bodom released their second album, Hatebreeder, in 1999. The album continued to build on their signature sound, combining aggressive metal riffing with melodic elements and virtuosic keyboard and guitar playing. Hatebreeder helped the band gain a wider audience and further established them in the international metal community, setting the stage for their breakthrough success with subsequent releases.

The band began to attract attention beyond the Finnish metal scene, with the album receiving critical acclaim for its combination of melodic death metal and technical proficiency. This album solidified their reputation as leading figures in the genre.

Further success with the release of Hate Crew Deathroll

The band's fourth album, Hate Crew Deathroll, came out in 2003, continuing their pattern of successful releases. Children of Bodom's growing fame led to increased touring opportunities and presence in the global metal scene.

Are You Dead Yet? album and sustained chart success

In 2005, Children of Bodom released Are You Dead Yet?, their fifth studio album. This record debuted at number one on the Finnish album charts, marking their fourth album to achieve this feat. The album showed the band experimenting more with their sound, incorporating elements of industrial and hard rock influences while keeping their melodic death metal roots intact. 2019

Last concert and band disbandment

Children of Bodom held their final concert in Helsinki in 2019, titled A Chapter Called Children of Bodom, marking the end of the band's career under this name. After over 25 years of making music, the members decided to part ways. Shortly afterward, founding members Alexi Laiho and Daniel Freyberg started a new project named Bodom After Midnight. Story of Children of Bodom

Children of Bodom, the influential Finnish melodic death metal band from Espoo, exploded onto the scene in 1993, initially operating under the name Inearthed. Their final lineup, before a highly publicized 2019 split, featured the iconic Alexi Laiho (vocals, guitar), Jaska Raatikainen (drums), Henkka Seppälä (bass), Janne Wirman (keyboards), and Daniel Freyberg (rhythm guitar).

This powerhouse quintet left an undeniable mark, releasing a prolific catalog including ten studio albums, three live albums, two EPs, two compilations, and a DVD. Their breakthrough came with Follow the Reaper, their third studio album, which achieved gold certification in Finland – a feat subsequently mirrored by every subsequent studio release. Four consecutive albums even debuted at #1 on the Finnish album charts, with significant chart placements on the US Billboard 200 also under their belts. Their commercial success cemented their position as one of Finland`s best-selling artists of all time, boasting sales exceeding 250,000 records domestically.

The bands final performance, a poignant farewell concert titled "A Chapter Called Children of Bodom," took place in Helsinki in 2019. Laiho and Freyberg later formed Bodom After Midnight in 2020, but the project was tragically cut short by the death of Laiho, the bands founding member and primary songwriter, in December 2020. The legacy of Children of Bodom, however, remains a cornerstone of melodic death metal, influenced by death metal titans like Dissection, Entombed, Cannibal Corpse, Autopsy, and Obituary, as well as classic metal giants such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Metallica, Dio, and Ozzy Osbourne.
