Story of Immolation

Hailing from Yonkers, New York, Immolation stands as one of the most influential and foundational American death metal bands. Alongside titans like Incantation, Mortician, and Suffocation, they are recognized as quintessential architects and pioneers of the distinct, brutal sound that defined the legendary New York Death Metal (NYDM) scene. Their uncompromising vision and a relentless sonic assault have cemented their status among the genre`s elite.

History

The origins of Immolation trace back to May 1986, emerging from the demise of Rigor Mortis (NY). This initial incarnation featured a formidable lineup: Andrew Sakowicz on bass guitar and vocals, Dave Wilkinson on drums, and the distinctive guitar work of Robert Vigna. After unleashing two raw, early demos – Decomposed and Warriors of Doom – a pivotal lineup change occurred in early 1988. Sakowicz departed, making way for the iconic bassist and vocalist Ross Dolan. With this crucial addition, the band underwent a decisive transformation, adopting the powerful moniker "Immolation."

This new, solidified lineup quickly carved out a reputation within the burgeoning global underground death metal scene. They unleashed two defining studio demos in 1988 and 1989, rapidly cultivating a dedicated worldwide following through the vital tape-trading network. This fervent support led to a landmark signing with Roadrunner Records, culminating in the release of their genre-defining debut album, Dawn of Possession in 1991. A masterclass in dissonance and unrelenting brutality, it instantly became a touchstone for aspiring death metal acts.

Following their tenure with Roadrunner, Immolation compiled their raw, early material and live tracks into the essential compilation, Stepping on Angels. A new chapter began in 1995 when the band inked a deal with the revered Metal Blade Records. Under this new banner, they unleashed a trilogy of death metal masterpieces: Here in After, Failures for Gods, and Close to a World Below. During this highly productive period, a significant rhythmic shift occurred after Here in After, with drummer Craig Smilowski departing and the powerhouse Alex Hernandez stepping in to propel their evolving sound.

Their journey continued with French label Listenable Records and Century Media in the US, forging a new partnership that saw the release of three more critically acclaimed albums: Unholy Cult, Harnessing Ruin, and Shadows in the Light. Each release further cemented Immolation`s reputation for innovative, dark, and crushingly heavy death metal.

By May 2001, Immolation had solidified their command of the extreme metal stage, headlining a monumental European tour. They were supported by a crushing lineup of fellow scene stalwarts: Deranged, Deströyer 666, Decapitated, and Soul Demise, showcasing their enduring influence and live prowess.
