Originally, the band was named Ahaziah, with the initial lineup including vocalist Alex Koehler, guitarist Chris Kilbourn, bassist Austin Marticorena, and lead guitarist Michael Stafford. Austin Marticorena introduced drummer Andrew Carlston. Shortly after, the band changed its name to Chelsea Grin and began developing their early material, setting the foundation for their deathcore sound.
2008

Release of Self-Titled Debut EP and Early Recognition

In July 2008, Chelsea Grin released their self-titled debut EP. The EP initially was streamed and released online via iTunes, then released worldwide on CD on July 27, 2008. The tracks featured from this EP, including "Crewcabanger" and "Lifeless," gained positive reception on Myspace, helping to build a fanbase online. This early release helped the band secure a deal with Statik Factory Records and began their first small tours on the west coast of the United States.
2009

Lineup Changes and Signing with Artery Recordings; Recording First Full-Length Album

After extensive touring and early success, Chelsea Grin experienced several lineup changes in 2009. Bassist Austin Marticorena left due to personal reasons and was temporarily replaced by Jake Harmond. Drummer Andrew Carlston was briefly ousted and then returned in April. Guitarist Chris Kilbourn left to start a record label. The band added Dan Jones and David Flinn, who became key members. They signed with Artery Recordings and recorded their debut full-length album, 'Desolation of Eden,' in August 2009 with producer Tim Lambesis.
2010

Release of 'Desolation of Eden' and Expansion of Sound

'Desolation of Eden' was released in 2010, marking Chelsea Grin's debut full-length album. This release solidified their position within the deathcore genre, featuring heavy palm-muted riffs, aggressive vocals, and complex guitar work. The album helped the band gain a wider audience and led to more extensive touring opportunities. The addition of a third guitarist and new members contributed significantly to the band's evolving sound.
2011

Release of 'My Damnation' and Growth in Popularity

Chelsea Grin released their second full-length album, 'My Damnation,' in 2011. The album saw the band refining their deathcore style with even more brutal and technical compositions. 2013

Lineup Change and Vocal Evolution

In 2013, drummer Andrew Carlston was replaced by Pablo Viveros, who also began contributing vocals. This allowed lead vocalist Alex Koehler to focus solely on high-pitched screams, while Viveros added mid- to low-range growls. This dual vocal approach added complexity and depth to the band's sound, distinguishing their style further. The lineup change marked a new phase in the band's development.
2014

Release of 'Ashes to Ashes' Album

'Ashes to Ashes,' Chelsea Grin's third full-length album, was released in 2014. Release of 'Self Inflicted' and Guitar Lineup Changes

In 2016, Chelsea Grin released their fourth full-length album, 'Self Inflicted.' This album saw the band maintaining their signature intense sound with even greater emphasis on brutality and precision. Around this period, the band began reducing the number of guitarists, moving away from their earlier setup that featured three guitar players. The lineup changes poised the band for stylistic shifts in upcoming releases.
2018

Major Lineup Changes and Release of 'Eternal Nightmare'

2018 was a pivotal year for Chelsea Grin, as founding vocalist Alex Koehler departed and was replaced by Tom Barber, former vocalist of Lorna Shore. The band also reduced their guitarists from three to one, marking a significant change in their instrumental approach. With this four-piece lineup, Chelsea Grin released their fifth album, 'Eternal Nightmare,' on July 13, 2018. This album embraced new sonic elements while maintaining the band's core deathcore sound, marking a new chapter in their career.

Story of Chelsea Grin

Hailing from Salt Lake City, Utah, Chelsea Grin emerged from the ashes of the band Ahaziah in 2007, quickly establishing themselves as a major force in the American deathcore scene. The original Ahaziah lineup – vocalist Alex Koehler, guitarist Chris Kilbourn, bassist Austin Marticorena, and lead guitarist Michael Stafford – underwent a significant transformation with the addition of Andrew Carlston and a name change. Marticorena played a crucial role in this transition, contributing to the songwriting and helping shape the band`s new sound.

Their self-titled debut EP, initially released online via iTunes before receiving a worldwide CD release in July 2008, showcased their brutal yet melodic deathcore style. Early singles like "Crewcabanger" and "Lifeless" garnered significant attention on Myspace, building a dedicated fanbase. The addition of guitarist Dan Jones and bassist David Flinn solidified their lineup, leading to the creation of their acclaimed full-length debut, Desolation of Eden (2010), followed by My Damnation (2011) and the Evolve EP (2012). While the band has seen numerous lineup changes since its inception – with no founding members remaining since 2018 – bassist David Flinn stands as the sole constant across all their studio albums, a testament to his enduring contribution to Chelsea Grins legacy. Over their career, theyve released two EPs and seven full-length albums, cementing their place as deathcore veterans.
