Story of All The Pretty Horses
All The Pretty Horses (ATPH), the Minneapolis-based "glam-punk" quartet fronted by transgender performance artist Venus de Mars, emerged in 1993. The band, initially comprising de Mars, drummer Bill Bailey, and bassist Edward Ford, released their self-titled debut in 1994.
For their sophomore effort, Queens and Angels (TRG Twin Tone), Matt Bachelor took over drums from Bailey, and Jonnycakes (Tiffany Tieche) joined as a backup vocalist. However, a failed record deal with a German label in 1998 prompted the band to re-evaluate their touring strategy, leading to the departures of Ford and Bachelor.
De Mars then assembled a new touring lineup, enlisting Jendeen Forberg (formerly of local jazz outfit Wolverines) on drums and Pandora (LeeAnn MacDougall) on bass. This iteration of ATPH issued Ruin in 2000. Subsequent personnel changes brought Eden Taylor to bass as ATPH began collaborating with producer Barb Morrison (Super Buddha) for their 2002 album, CREATURE. Tempest then replaced Taylor on bass in 2004 and toured with the band to promote Emily Goldberg`s 2003 rock documentary, Venus of Mars.
In 2006, de Mars placed ATPH on hiatus to focus on her solo-electric album, Trashed and Broken Hearted (2006), also produced by Barb Morrison. The band reformed in 2008 as "Venus de Mars & All The Pretty Horses," featuring T-Rev (Trevor Hawley) on drums, LeFreak (J Evan) on bass, and Raymond Breed on second guitar.
Drummer Jazz Stafford succeeded T-Rev for the 2011 album, 10 Bones, another production with Barb Morrison. Stafford remained through a 2014 tour supporting Laura Jane Grace and Against Me!. That same year, de Mars unveiled her solo-acoustic debut, Flesh and Wire, which featured Laura Jane Grace on the single "Take My Shoulder" (also produced by Barb Morrison).
ATPH experienced further lineup adjustments in 2015 when Susanna Sweet (Susanna Mae Schlagen) joined as second guitarist, replacing Raymond Breed, and Mercy Victor took over bass from LeFreak. T-Rev also rejoined on drums. The most recent change occurred in 2020 with Danimae Vossen becoming the new bassist. As of June 2022, Venus de Mars & All The Pretty Horses are poised to release their 11th album, I Think The Darkness, once again under Barb Morrison`s production.
