Seether formed in May 1999 in Pretoria, South Africa, originally under the name Saron Gas. The founding members included lead vocalist and guitarist Shaun Morgan, bassist Tyronne Morris, and drummer Dave Cohoe. They released their first album, Fragile, in October 2000 through Musketeer Records, gaining success in a pop-dominated region. Name Change and Release of Disclaimer Album

After signing with the American label Wind-up Records, the band was advised to change their name to avoid confusion with the toxic chemical sarin gas. They adopted the name Seether, inspired by a song from the band Veruca Salt. In August 2002, Seether released their debut official album, Disclaimer, which included the successful single "Fine Again". This track gained mainstream popularity and was featured in video games like Madden NFL 2003 and 1080° Avalanche, boosting their profile significantly in the United States and abroad.

Breakthrough with "Broken" and Disclaimer II

Following the touring success of Disclaimer, Seether reworked their acoustic ballad "Broken" into an electric version featuring Amy Lee of Evanescence. This collaboration gained significant attention and was featured on The Punisher soundtrack. The song became a major hit, peaking at number 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. In June 2004, the band released Disclaimer II, a remix and re-recorded version of their debut album with extra tracks, further solidifying their presence in the rock scene and expanding their fan base.

Release of Karma and Effect

Seether released their second full-length album, Karma and Effect, in May 2005. Initially intended to be called Catering to Cowards, the title was changed due to label demands. The album debuted at number 8 on the US Billboard 200 and achieved Gold certification in both the United States and Canada. It produced successful singles like "Remedy" that charted well on mainstream rock charts, delivering commercial and critical success and establishing the band as a consistent force in the post-grunge genre.
2018

Introduction of Second Guitarist Corey Lowery

In 2018, Seether expanded their lineup by adding Corey Lowery as a second guitarist. This addition influenced their live performances and contributed to the band's evolving sound. Over the years, Seether has had several notable touring and recording guitarists, including Troy McLawhorn and Corey’s brother Clint. However, lead vocalist Shaun Morgan has traditionally recorded most of the guitar parts in studio recordings, maintaining a consistent musical style.

Story of Seether

Seether: A South African Rock Band's Rise to International Stardom

Seether, a South African rock band hailing from Pretoria, Gauteng, emerged onto the music scene in 1999. Initially known as "Saron Gas," the band adopted their current moniker in 2002 after relocating to the United States. This name change aimed to avoid confusion with the deadly chemical agent, Sarin gas.

The band's core lineup has remained relatively consistent throughout their career, with Shaun Morgan, lead vocalist and guitarist, being the longest-serving member. Bassist Dale Stewart joined shortly after the band's formation, followed by drummer John Humphrey, who joined for their second album. Since 2018, the band has featured second guitarist Corey Lowery, making them a four-piece unit.

While notable guitarists such as Corey's brother Clint and Troy McLawhorn have contributed to tours and recordings, Shaun Morgan has predominantly handled the majority of guitar parts on their albums.

Seether's breakthrough came in 2002 with their US Active Rock number-one single, "Fine Again." Their success continued in 2004 with "Broken," which peaked at number 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. Since then, the band has amassed a string of chart-topping hits on the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, including "Remedy," "Fake It," "Country Song," "Tonight," "Words as Weapons," "Let You Down," "Dangerous," "Bruised and Bloodied," and "Wasteland."

Seether has released eight studio albums, with their latest, "Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum," dropping in 2020. As of 2023, Corey Lowery holds the title of Seether's longest-serving lead guitarist in their current four-piece configuration.

Seether's journey from their South African roots to their global success story is a testament to their raw talent, powerful songwriting, and unwavering dedication to their craft. Their impact on the rock scene continues to be felt worldwide, making them one of the most influential and enduring bands of the 21st century.
