Band Timeline

1990

Formation of Converge

Converge was formed in the winter of 1990 in Salem, Massachusetts by vocalist Jacob Bannon and guitarist Kurt Ballou. They were later joined by high school friends Jeff Feinberg on bass and Damon Bellorado on drums in 1991. Initially, the band played covers of hardcore punk, punk rock, and heavy metal songs, gradually moving towards creating their own original music by 1994.
1994

Release of Debut Album and Lineup Expansion

In 1994, Converge became a five-piece band with the addition of second guitarist Aaron Dalbec. That same year, they released their debut album, 'Halo in a Haystack,' through Earthmaker Records. The album was released only as a limited vinyl pressing of 1000 copies, funded by Bannon's earnings from working at a nursing home. This release marked their transition from cover band to recording artists with serious original material.
1995

Early Compilations and EPs

Converge released the compilation album 'Caring and Killing' in 1995 consisting of early works from 1991 to 1994. Originally a European release through Lost & Found Records, it was reissued by Hydra Head Records in 1997 due to the band's dissatisfaction with the original label's handling. Additionally, they released the EP 'Unloved and Weeded Out' the same year, marking a step toward their contemporary sound.
1996-1998

Petitioning the Empty Sky and When Forever Comes Crashing Era

The band released the 'Petitioning the Empty Sky' EP in 1996 through Ferret Music, a significant early release under the then-new label. The EP was reissued several times, including a notable 1998 version with extra live tracks, blurring lines between EP and compilation album. Around this period, bassist Jeff Feinberg was replaced first by Stephen Brodsky and then later by Nate Newton, and drummer Damon Bellorado was also replaced.
2001

Jane Doe Breakthrough and Lineup Solidification

Converge recorded and released their landmark fourth album 'Jane Doe' in 2001, which marked a major breakthrough. The album, highly acclaimed for its aggressive and boundary-pushing sound, ranks among the best metal albums of the decade and influenced the metalcore genre significantly. During its recording, longtime guitarist Aaron Dalbec departed, and the lineup stabilized with Nate Newton on bass and Ben Koller on drums, forming a quartet that has remained constant since.
2004

Move to Epitaph Records and Expanding Reach

Following the success of 'Jane Doe,' Converge moved from Equal Vision Records to the larger label Epitaph Records. This transition allowed them to produce records with more elaborate production values and larger budgets, expanding their audience and distribution. Their evolving sound combined hardcore and heavy metal elements, reinforcing their pioneering role in metalcore and mathcore genres.
2017

Release of 'The Dusk in Us'

'The Dusk in Us,' Converge's ninth studio album, was released in 2017, showcasing the band's continued growth and maintaining their aggressive and innovative style. The album received positive critical reception, further cementing Converge's reputation as influential figures in modern heavy music. The lineup for this album remained consistent with Bannon, Ballou, Newton, and Koller.
2021

Collaboration with Chelsea Wolfe - Bloodmoon: I

In 2021, Converge released 'Bloodmoon: I,' their first full-length collaboration with singer-songwriter Chelsea Wolfe. This album merged the intense and chaotic sound of Converge with Wolfe's dark, atmospheric style, creating a notable experimental project in the band's discography. The collaboration highlighted the band's willingness to push boundaries and explore new musical territories beyond traditional metalcore.

Story of Converge

Converge, the Salem, Massachusetts-born metalcore titans, exploded onto the scene in 1990, forged from the creative fire of vocalist Jacob Bannon and guitarist/producer Kurt Ballou. Their early lineup solidified in 1991 with the addition of bassist Jeff Feinberg and drummer Damon Bellorado. While the band's early work laid the groundwork, it was their landmark 2001 album, Jane Doe, that cemented their legacy. The recording of Jane Doe marked a turning point, ushering in a new era with the departure of guitarist Aaron Dalbec and the arrival of bassist Nate Newton and drummer Ben Koller – a lineup that remains intact to this day.

This incredibly influential quartet, pioneers of both metalcore and its mathcore subgenre, unleashed a ferociously aggressive and relentlessly innovative sound, blending hardcore punk's raw energy with the heaviness of metal. Their impact is undeniable: Jane Doe earned accolades as the best album of 2001 (Terrorizer), the best of the decade (Sputnikmusic), and eventually landed at #61 on Rolling Stone's list of the greatest metal albums of all time.

Following the success of Jane Doe, Converge transitioned from Equal Vision Records to the larger Epitaph Records, resulting in increasingly elaborate and expensive productions. Special releases often found a home with Deathwish Inc., Bannon's own label established in 1999. The band’s prolific output continues with their ninth studio album, The Dusk in Us (2017), and their first full-length collaboration, Bloodmoon: I (2021), with Chelsea Wolfe. AllMusic aptly describes them as "one of the most original and innovative bands to emerge from the punk underground," a testament to their enduring influence and groundbreaking sound. The individual members have also actively contributed to various side projects, including Supermachiner (Bannon), Old Man Gloom (Newton), and Mutoid Man (Koller), further showcasing their diverse musical talents and commitment to pushing creative boundaries.
