Formation of Queen Sea Big Shark

Queen Sea Big Shark was formed in Beijing in 2005 by lead singer Fu Han, guitarists Cao Pu and Wang Zi, bassist Wang Jinghan, and drummer Xiao Wu. The band took its name from a sign by Houhai (Queen Sea) Lake in Beijing declaring a 'big shark' ownership, symbolizing their unique and bold presence in the Chinese indie rock scene. This formation marked the beginning of what would become a significant post-punk and indie rock band in China.
2007

Debut Album Release and Initial Recognition

In 2007, Queen Sea Big Shark released their self-titled debut album under the Modern Sky label. The album showcased their raw post-punk and indie rock sound that drew comparisons to American band Yeah Yeah Yeahs. This debut established the band's foundation and identity in the indie music scene, gaining recognition for their energetic style. The album helped build their initial fanbase and set the stage for future creative developments.
2009

US Tour and AIDS Awareness Campaign

Queen Sea Big Shark participated in the "Sing for China" tour in 2009, opening for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs during their short tour across the United States. This tour had the broader purpose of raising awareness for AIDS in China, featuring other Beijing bands such as Hedgehog and Casino Demon. Additionally, the band released the exclusive track and music video "Let's Play" on the Converse China website, marking their growing presence in both music and social causes.

After a six-year hiatus, Queen Sea Big Shark returned in March 2016 with their third album, "Beijing Surfer's Adventure." 2018

Lineup Change: Departure of Drummer Xiao Wu

In 2018, founding drummer Xiao Wu left Queen Sea Big Shark to pursue a career as a music teacher. He was succeeded by Wu Xiaodong, who participated in recording singles such as "Superpowers" (2018), "Haiyan Shuo" (2020), and "Benpao ba..." (2020). This lineup change represented a new chapter for the band as they continued producing music and adapting to fresh dynamics within the group.
2020

Increased Exposure and Challenges Due to COVID-19

In 2020, Queen Sea Big Shark gained further exposure by appearing on the iQiyi music show The Big Band, performing the single "Mammoth" from their 2016 album. However, guitarist Cao Pu was trapped outside China due to COVID-19 border restrictions and did not return to the band, leaving Wang Zi as the sole guitarist. The band adapted to these challenges while continuing to release new music, though the pandemic disrupted live performances.
2021-2023

Solo Endeavors and Impact of Pandemic

Lead singer Fu Han released her first solo album in 2021, indicating individual artistic growth. Meanwhile, Queen Sea Big Shark continued touring until January 2022, when the COVID-19 pandemic forced a halt to live music events in China. During this hiatus, Fu Han became a mother in July 2023. This period marked a slowdown in band activities but also allowed personal milestones and solo projects to flourish.
2024

Resumption of Touring and Future Uncertainty

In May 2024, Queen Sea Big Shark resumed touring after the pandemic-related hiatus. The promotional materials for their post-pandemic performances feature only Fu Han and the two Wangs (Wang Zi and Wang Jinghan), suggesting that drummer Wu Xiaodong may no longer be a permanent member. Cao Pu has not returned, indicating ongoing changes and uncertainty in the band's lineup as they continue their musical journey.
