Band Timeline

1995

Formation of Snot

Snot was formed in 1995 in Santa Barbara, California by vocalist Lynn Strait, formerly a bassist in a punk band called Lethal Dose, and lead guitarist Mikey Doling, previously of the band Kronix. The band quickly developed a strong local following through dynamic live performances in Los Angeles, establishing their presence in the emerging nu metal scene.
1997

Release of debut album 'Get Some'

Snot signed with Geffen Records and began work on their debut album with producer T-Ray. Their album 'Get Some' was released on May 13, 1997. The album helped them gain national attention and featured their raw, energetic nu metal sound. This period marked the band's initial rise to broader recognition.
1998

Tour and Tragedy

In 1998, Snot performed on the prominent Ozzfest tour, further increasing their exposure. However, the year was marked by tragedy when on December 11, 1998, vocalist Lynn Strait died in a car accident along with his dog Dobbs. This sudden loss deeply affected the band and led to their disbandment as they felt unable to continue without their frontman.
2000

Tribute album 'Strait Up' released

Despite Lynn Strait having not recorded vocals for a planned second album, friends and notable vocalists from bands such as System of a Down, Korn, and Slipknot joined to complete the vocal tracks as a tribute. The album 'Strait Up' was released on November 7, 2000, featuring new music composed by Mikey Doling tailored to each guest vocalist's style. The album reached number 56 on the Billboard 200.
2002

Release of live album 'Alive!'

Snot released a live album titled 'Alive!' on July 30, 2002. The album captured the band's live energy and reached number 12 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart, maintaining interest in the band during their inactivity and honoring Lynn Strait's legacy.
2007

One-off reunion performance

On April 5, 2007, the band reunited for a one-time performance in Anaheim, California. Jeff Weber from Invitro handled vocals for this show. This brief reunion indicated continuing interest among the band members and fans, but it was not a full-scale comeback.
2008

First reunion and new vocalist Tommy Vext

In 2008, Snot reunited with original members Mikey Doling, John Fahnestock, Jamie Miller, and Sonny Mayo along with new vocalist Tommy Vext from Divine Heresy. This lineup began performing and recording activities, marking a fresh chapter for the band after a decade.
2009

Formation of Tons and new vocalist Brandon Espinoza

Following departures of Tommy Vext and Sonny Mayo, some members formed a new band called Tons with vocalist Brandon Espinoza (formerly of Spineshank). Tons recorded three songs before the members transitioned to other projects, signaling instability in maintaining the Snot lineup that period.
2014

Second reunion and Touring

On February 11, 2014, Snot reunited again, featuring Tommy Vext, Sonny Mayo, Mikey Doling, John Fahnestock, and Jamie Miller. They played multiple shows including at the Whisky a Go Go and planned extensive touring through late 2014 and internationally in early 2015. However, vocalist Tommy Vext left in October 2014, replaced by Carl Bensley for European tours, with Mike Smith filling in for Mayo due to business commitments.
2024

Third reunion and new vocalist Andy Knapp

After a period of relative inactivity, lead guitarist Mikey Doling teased Snot's return in September 2024. The band officially announced their reunion in November 2024 with rhythm guitarist Sonny Mayo returning and Andy Knapp joining as the new vocalist. This marks the latest chapter in Snot's intermittent but enduring presence in the nu metal scene.

Story of Snot

Snot: A Nu-Metal Tragedy and Resurrection

Hailing from Santa Barbara, California, Snot exploded onto the nu-metal scene in 1995. The band, forged from the ashes of local punk and metal acts (Lethal Dose and Kronix, respectively), quickly gained a ferocious following thanks to the raw energy of vocalist Lynn Strait and guitarist Mikey Doling. Their hard-hitting live shows in Los Angeles earned them a deal with Geffen Records, culminating in the release of their seminal debut album, Get Some, in May 1997. Produced by T-Ray, Get Some cemented their place in the burgeoning nu-metal landscape.

Tragedy struck during the band's 1998 Ozzfest tour. On July 9th, 1998, Strait's life was tragically cut short following an incident in Mansfield, Massachusetts, where he was arrested after emerging nude from a large toilet prop used by Limp Bizkit during their performances. His death brought the band to an abrupt and devastating end.

Despite the loss, Snot's legacy endured. In 2008, the remaining original lineup – Doling, bassist John Fahnestock, drummer Jamie Miller, and rhythm guitarist Sonny Mayo – reunited. They eventually formed a new band, Tons, in 2009, with vocalist Brandon Espinosa. However, the enduring power of Snot proved too strong, and the band announced another reformation in February 2014. The story of Snot is a testament to the raw power of their music and the enduring impact of Lynn Strait, tragically cut down in his prime.
