Band Timeline

2006-2007

Formation and Early Years

Memphis May Fire was formed in 2006 in Denton, Texas, initially under the name Oh Captain, My Captain. The original lineup included vocalist Chase Ryan, guitarist Ryan Bentley, and bassist Tanner Oakes. In early 2007, they solidified their name as Memphis May Fire and self-released an EP that began gathering local attention. Their early sound was rooted in metalcore with influences of southern rock. Their rising profile caught the attention of Trustkill Records, leading to the band’s signing in September 2007. Their EP was reissued by Trustkill in December 2007, marking the start of their professional recording career. During this period, they toured with bands like Twelve Gauge Valentine and The Handshake Murders, building their initial fanbase.
2008-2009

Lineup Changes and Debut Album 'Sleepwalking'

In 2008, significant lineup changes affected the band. Original vocalist Chase Ryan left to focus on his family, and drummer Dooley also departed. Bassist Tanner Oakes quit the band, and several replacements came and went before Cory Elder became the permanent bassist. Matty Mullins took over lead vocals, marking a major turning point for the band's sound and dynamic. Despite these changes, Memphis May Fire recorded and released their debut full-length album, 'Sleepwalking', in July 2009 through Trustkill Records. The album featured aggressive guitar work combined with melodic elements and southern influences. The track 'Ghost in the Mirror' was featured on the soundtrack for the film Saw VI, giving the band wider exposure. This period consolidated their style and set them on a rising trajectory in the metalcore scene.
2010-2011

Signing with Rise Records and Release of 'The Hollow'

Following the debut release, Memphis May Fire signed with Rise Records and released their second EP, 'Between the Lies', in November 2010. This period marked refining their sound and gaining momentum within the metalcore community. In April 2011, they released their second full-length album, 'The Hollow', which showcased a more polished production and strong songwriting. The album helped to increase their fanbase considerably with singles such as 'The Sinner' and 'Prove Me Right'. The band embarked on extensive tours to promote the album, playing major festivals and supporting notable acts in the genre. 'The Hollow' is often considered a breakthrough album that established them as a significant force in the metalcore scene.
2012-2014

Growth and Release of Third Album 'Challenger'

Between 2012 and 2014, Memphis May Fire continued to expand their presence in the rock and metal scenes. They released their third studio album, 'Challenger', in June 2012. This album demonstrated the band's evolution towards a heavier and more emotionally intense sound, with themes of struggle and perseverance. It charted on the Billboard 200, reflecting their increasing popularity. The band toured extensively in support of 'Challenger', performing headline shows and participating in major rock festivals. This era solidified their reputation for energetic live performances and emotionally resonant music that connected deeply with fans.
2014-2016

Release and Success of 'Unconditional'

In 2014, Memphis May Fire released their fourth studio album, 'Unconditional', which became their most commercially successful record to date. The album debuted at number 4 on the US Billboard 200 and reached the top position on the Alternative Albums chart. 'Unconditional' featured a mix of heavy metalcore elements with more melodic and anthemic songs, showcasing the band's growth and versatility. The album included themes of love, pain, and redemption, resonating widely with audiences. The release was followed by extensive touring throughout the US and internationally, helping to cement their place as one of the leading bands in modern metalcore during this period.

Story of Memphis May Fire

Memphis May Fire, the Denton, Texas metalcore titans, have carved a significant path since their 2006 inception. Currently signed to Rise Records, the band—featuring vocalist Matty Mullins, guitarist Kellen McGregor, bassist Cory Elder, and drummer Jake Garland—boasts a formidable discography: seven studio albums and two EPs. Their impact is undeniable, with Unconditional, their fourth album, reaching #4 on the Billboard 200 and topping the Alternative Albums chart.

The band's history is a compelling story. Initially known as Oh Captain, My Captain, the group solidified their name and lineup in early 2007 with original members Chase Ryan (vocals), Ryan Bentley (guitar), and Tanner Oakes (bass). A self-released EP quickly built a local buzz, catching the ear of Josh Grabelle, president of Trustkill Records. Grabelle's enthusiastic response in a press release—comparing their compelling songwriting to Bullet for My Valentine's Hand of Blood—highlighted their early promise and cemented their potential for greatness.
