Band Timeline

1998

Formation of SaGoh 24/7, the precursor to Anberlin

In 1998, the members who would eventually form Anberlin started their musical journey with a punk band called SaGoh 24/7, formed by lead vocalist Stephen Christian, bassist Deon Rexroat, guitarist Joseph Milligan, and drummer Sean Hutson. They released two albums under Rescue Records but had limited commercial success, selling only approximately 1,300 units. After some member changes, the group evolved creatively, setting the groundwork for what would later become Anberlin.
2002

Formation of Anberlin and signing with Tooth & Nail Records

Anberlin was officially formed in Winter Haven, Florida, in 2002, as the members decided to shift their musical style towards alternative rock, moving away from their punk roots in SaGoh 24/7. Within about a year, they recorded five demos with producer Matt Goldman, which helped them secure a deal with semi-independent label Tooth & Nail Records. This marked the beginning of their professional recording career, setting a foundation for their future success in the alternative rock scene.
2003

Release of debut album 'Blueprints for the Black Market'

Anberlin released their first studio album, 'Blueprints for the Black Market', in 2003. Produced by Aaron Sprinkle, who would remain a key collaborator, the album showcased their distinct alternative rock sound. Though it did not chart nationally, the album laid the groundwork for the band's rising popularity. The single 'Readyfuels' gained attention and helped the album sell around 60,000 copies, marking a significant first step in building their fan base.
2005

Release of second album 'Never Take Friendship Personal' and rising popularity

'Never Take Friendship Personal', the band's second album, was released in 2005 and represented a maturation of their sound. It achieved more commercial success, peaking at No. 144 on the Billboard 200 and No. 3 on the Top Heatseekers chart. The single 'Paperthin Hymn' charted on the Alternative Songs chart at No. 38, helping to expand their audience. The album sold over 150,000 copies, more than doubling the sales of their debut and establishing Anberlin as a notable name in alternative rock circles.
2007

Release of third album 'Cities' and signing with Universal Republic

'Cities', Anberlin's third studio album, was released in February 2007 and became their first top 20 Billboard 200 album, debuting at No. 19 with initial sales of 34,000 copies. Produced again by Aaron Sprinkle, the album reflected a more mature theme with lyrics exploring internal conflict. It gathered critical acclaim and included successful singles like 'Godspeed' and 'The Unwinding Cable Car'. Following this success, the band signed with major label Universal Republic, marking a pivotal moment by transitioning to a major label for wider exposure.
2008

Release of major-label debut 'New Surrender' and chart success

In September 2008, Anberlin released 'New Surrender', their fourth studio album and first under Universal Republic. The album peaked at No. 13 on the Billboard 200, Anberlin's highest charting to that point. It featured a re-recording of 'Feel Good Drag' from their previous album, which after an unprecedented 29 weeks climbed to No. 1 on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart, becoming a signature hit. This period marked Anberlin's peak commercial breakthrough and expansion into mainstream alternative rock popularity.
2010

Release of fifth album 'Dark Is the Way, Light Is a Place' and continued success

Anberlin released their fifth studio album, 'Dark Is the Way, Light Is a Place', in 2010. Coming off prior successes, the album further solidified their presence in the alternative rock scene with mature thematic elements and robust production. By this time, Anberlin had sold over one million albums cumulatively, demonstrating their commercial viability and enduring appeal. The band maintained a strong fan base and toured extensively, showcasing their evolving artistry.
2012-2013

Release of 'Vital' and its re-release as 'Devotion'

In October 2012, Anberlin released their sixth studio album, 'Vital', marking an important release as it would be their last before a planned hiatus. The album featured polished production and continued the band's growth musically and lyrically. In 2013, 'Vital' was re-released under Big3 Records with the title 'Devotion', including additional tracks and bonus content. This period maintained the band's momentum and kept their work in circulation as they contemplated future steps in their career.
2014

Announcement of disbandment and release of final album 'Lowborn'

In January 2014, Anberlin announced they would be disbanding after completing a final album and tour. They recorded their seventh studio album, 'Lowborn', returning to their original label, Tooth & Nail Records. The album was released in 2014, followed by their farewell tour. This marked the end of Anberlin's initial era after over a decade of influential alternative rock contributions and a loyal fan following.

Reunion and touring activities

In late 2018, Anberlin reunited for a series of concerts, reigniting excitement among fans. Throughout 2019, they continued touring, demonstrating their lasting influence and strong live performance appeal. Story of Anberlin

Anberlin: From Florida Roots to Chart-Topping Success

Anberlin, the American alternative rock band hailing from Winter Haven, Florida, emerged from the ashes of SaGoh 24/7, their earlier musical venture. Formed in 2002 with a fresh sound and a new name, they quickly captured the attention of Tooth & Nail Records, a leading independent label, and released their debut album, Blueprints for the Black Market, in 2003.

Their second album, Never Take Friendship Personal (2005), solidified their growing fanbase, but it was their 2007 release, Cities, that truly propelled them into the mainstream. Reaching the top 20 on the Billboard 200 with a first-week sales of 34,000 copies, Anberlin proved they were a force to be reckoned with.

This success led to a major label deal with Universal Republic in 2007, and their subsequent album, New Surrender (2008), debuted at No. 13 on the Billboard 200. The single "Feel Good Drag" dominated the Alternative Songs chart for an impressive 29 weeks, claiming the coveted No. 1 spot.

By the time their fifth studio album, Dark Is the Way, Light Is a Place, hit shelves in 2010, Anberlin had already sold over 1 million albums, solidifying their position as one of the most successful and influential alternative rock bands of the 2000s.

With their signature blend of emotive lyrics, soaring melodies, and powerful instrumentation, Anberlin carved their own path in the rock scene, captivating fans worldwide and leaving an enduring legacy in the world of alternative music.
