Band Timeline

1993

Formation of Early Bands Leading to A Wilhelm Scream

In 1993, the roots of A Wilhelm Scream were formed in New Bedford, Massachusetts, when drummer Trevor Reilly, guitarist John Carvalho, and bassist Jonathan Teves started the band Adam's Crack. This early incarnation was influenced by Nirvana and recorded a demo cassette. Subsequently, Reilly and Carvalho started a side project with vocalist Nuno Pereira. These bands merged and evolved into the group Koen by 1994, marking the beginning of the band's collaborative core members.
1997

Transition to Smackin' Isaiah and Early Releases

By 1997, the group changed its name from Koen to Smackin' Isaiah to reflect the band's growing maturity and changing lineup. Under the Smackin' Isaiah name, the band released a cassette called "Give Girls More Beer..." which demonstrated a more developed sound leaning towards punk and ska influences. During this time, Mat Demelo, who contributed guitar and trumpet, left the band. Drummer Nicholas Angelini became a permanent addition, stabilizing the lineup. They continued to release demo material, including the 1998 cassette "Gets Eaten Alive."
2000

First CD Release and Debut Album on Tank Records

The band’s first CD release came through Tank Records, a label created by members Carvalho and Teves. This release was a split titled "6:6:6" with Moronique and Merrick. Shortly after, they released their debut full-length album "The Way to a Girl's Heart Is Through Her Boyfriend's Stomach." Featuring all songs written after Angelini joined, this record is considered the band's first definitive output, showcasing a more upbeat and cheerful tone. This period marked their growing presence in the punk scene.
2002

Second Album and Lineup Changes Amidst Production Struggles

In 2002, the band released their second album "Benefits of Thinking Out Loud" on Tank Records. The recording process was fraught with internal conflict concerning the album's production, reflecting artistic differences among members. From these sessions, an EP titled "The Champagne of Bands... We Know Sexy" was compiled featuring six outtakes. Following the album’s release, guitarist John Carvalho left the band and was quickly replaced by Christopher Levesque. This marked a significant lineup shift and a turning point towards a more serious and technical approach in their music.
2003

Name Change to A Wilhelm Scream and Re-release of Previous Work

As part of a renewed commitment to their evolving sound and seriousness as a band, they adopted the name A Wilhelm Scream in 2003. This name change coincided with signing to Jump Start Records, who re-released the "Benefits of Thinking Out Loud" album under the new band name. The rebranding represented a new chapter, reflecting their growth and desire to reach a wider audience across the United States and Canada through extensive touring.
2004

Release of Mute Print and Partnership with Nitro Records

In 2004, A Wilhelm Scream released "Mute Print," an album showcasing a faster, more aggressive and technically proficient sound that became a hallmark of the band. They worked with producers Bill Stevenson of Descendents and Jason Livermore, both highly regarded in the punk rock community. Although initially finished under Jump Start Records, the album rights were acquired by Nitro Records, which provided broader exposure. "Mute Print" is seen as a breakthrough album, greatly expanding their fan base and solidifying their status in melodic hardcore.
2005

Release of Ruin a Good Time and Continued Collaboration with Nitro Records

Building on the momentum of their previous success, A Wilhelm Scream released "Ruin a Good Time" in 2005, again produced by Bill Stevenson and Jason Livermore. This album continued the band's signature blend of technical skill, speed, and melody, gaining critical acclaim within punk circles. Nitro Records supported the release with tours and promotion, helping the band reach new audiences. Story of A Wilhelm Scream

A Wilhelm Scream: A Melodic Hardcore Force from New Bedford

A Wilhelm Scream (AWS) is a melodic hardcore band from New Bedford, Massachusetts, known for their energetic, infectious, and often chaotic sound. Their music blends the intensity of hardcore with catchy melodies, drawing comparisons to bands like Strung Out, Hot Water Music, Propagandhi, and Strike Anywhere.

The band's name is a nod to the iconic "Wilhelm scream," a famous stock sound effect widely used in movies. This playful reference reflects the band's own unique brand of energetic and memorable music.

A Storied History:

AWS's journey began long before their current moniker. They emerged from the ashes of several earlier bands, including Adam's Crack, Koen, and Smackin' Isaiah. These early bands honed their musical chops, experimenting with styles like Nirvana-inspired grunge and skate punk/ska before settling on their signature melodic hardcore sound.

From Early Days to A Wilhelm Scream:
