Band Timeline

2019

Formation and Debut Demo Release

Sunami was formed in San Jose, California in 2019 originally as a joke band by members of various Bay Area hardcore bands. The band intended to parody the style of many hardcore bands with low intelligence in the beatdown hardcore scene. The name Sunami was proposed by bassist Theo Dominguez, and Mike Durrett began crafting instrumentals at a friend's home studio. Their debut demo EP 'Demonstration' was released on August 19, 2019, marking their first official release. They planned only three live performances including a breakup show.
2019

Explosive Live Debut Performance

Sunami's live debut took place on October 26, 2019, at the San Jose Peace & Justice Center. This performance was highly intense and chaotic, characterized by violent moshing and hardcore dancing with costumes, leaving several audience members bleeding. The band played an eight-minute set in a small room packed beyond capacity with about 100 people inside and another 100 outside, unable to get in. Drummer Benny Eissmann joined the band just hours before the show, with their first rehearsal the same day. Viral videos of this debut garnered the band significant notoriety and festival offers.
2020

COVID-19 Lockdown Impacts on Live Shows

Following their initial shows and invitations to festivals like FYA Festival and Sound and Fury, Sunami faced setbacks as the COVID-19 pandemic forced lockdowns and cancellations of live events. This period halted their planned performances but allowed the band to continue building their music and fanbase through other means, setting the stage for future releases and performances once live shows resumed.
2021

Split EP with Gulch and Second Major Performances

On March 1, 2021, Sunami released a split EP with fellow hardcore band Gulch, showcasing their continuing collaboration within the Bay Area hardcore scene. Their self-titled debut EP followed on June 5, 2021. That month, Sunami played their second live performance, a guerrilla-style show in San Jose that attracted around 2000 attendees. The outdoor performance included other notable hardcore bands, cementing their status in the hardcore punk community. They followed this with another outdoor show on June 27, expanding their live presence.
2022

New Releases and Festival Appearance

Sunami released their 'LP Promo EP' on May 20, 2022, continuing to build their discography and momentum. They also performed at the widely recognized Sound Fury Festival on July 30, 2022, further exposing them to hardcore audiences and festival goers. These activities marked a year of development and increased visibility for the band in the hardcore scene.
2023

Debut Album Release and Extensive Touring

Sunami released their self-titled debut full-length album on June 14, 2023, a significant milestone confirming their rise in the hardcore music world. Prior to the album release, their first North American headlining tour in spring 2023 sold out all 28 dates, showing their strong fanbase. Following this, they toured Australia with bands Scowl and Speed in May and June. They completed a European co-headline tour between June 23 and July 9, and scheduled a headline tour in Japan in September, marking their international expansion and cementing their influence in the global hardcore punk scene.

Story of Sunami

Sunami: From Bay Area Hardcore Joke to Zeitgeist Dominators

Sunami, the San Jose hardcore punk band, exploded onto the scene in 2019, initially conceived as a tongue-in-cheek project by veterans of the vibrant San Francisco Bay Area hardcore scene. Their 2019 Demonstration demo served as a satirical jab at the perceived cluelessness within certain segments of the hardcore community. However, a brutally energetic debut live performance catapulted them to notoriety, extending their lifespan far beyond their initially intended short run.

Since then, this powerhouse quartet has released three EPs and their self-titled debut album on June 14, 2023. Their ascent has been meteoric, with Revolver magazine placing them "in the upper echelon of bands dominating the hardcore zeitgeist" in 2023.

History:

The members, all seasoned musicians with past experience in prominent Bay Area bands like Gulch, Hands of God, Drain, Spinebreaker, and Lead Dream, first connected through the local hardcore scene. The band's formation in 2019 stemmed from a joke, an idea proposed by Josef Alfonso, with the name "Sunami" – conceived a decade earlier by bassist Theo Dominguez – quickly adopted. Mike Durrett then began crafting the instrumental tracks at their friend Charles Toshio's home studio, with Toshio contributing drums and structuring the instrumental arrangements for the early material. What started as a parody quickly evolved into a major force in hardcore punk.
