2019

Formation and Early Releases

Scowl formed in Santa Cruz, California in 2019. The band lineup included singer Kat Moss, bassist Bailey Lupo, drummer Cole Gilbert, and guitarist Mike Bifolco who joined later in 2023. In 2019, they released their first self-titled EP followed by a second EP, Reality After Reality..., establishing their presence in the hardcore punk scene with energetic sounds and raw emotion.
2021

Debut Album - How Flowers Grow

In 2021, Scowl released their first full-length album entitled How Flowers Grow through Flatspot Records. This album marked a significant milestone, gaining wider recognition and acclaim in the hardcore punk community. The record's themes and intensity helped the band build a strong fanbase, supported by singles and music videos like 'Bloodhound' and 'Seeds to Sow'. The success of this album enabled Scowl to embark on extensive tours with prominent bands including Circle Jerks and System Of A Down.
2023

Release of Psychic Dance Routine and Expanded Lineup

Scowl continued to grow musically and professionally by releasing their third EP, Psychic Dance Routine, in 2023. During the same year, Mike Bifolco, who had been touring with the band since 2022, officially became a permanent member. The band toured internationally, including a notable Australian tour with Sunami and Speed. They also performed at the prestigious Coachella festival, expanding their reach to broader audiences. However, this period was marked by personal and emotional challenges for the members, including health issues for vocalist Kat Moss and backlash from parts of the hardcore community due to the band's increasing mainstream visibility.
2024

Signing to Dead Oceans and New Single

In October 2024, Scowl announced their signing with the renowned indie label Dead Oceans. This partnership came with the release of a new single titled 'Special,' highlighting an evolution in the band's sound and artistic direction. Signing with Dead Oceans marked a new phase in Scowl's career, providing them with greater industry support and resources to reach wider audiences while continuing to build on their roots in hardcore punk.
2025

Release of Sophomore Album - Are We All Angels and Touring

April 4, 2025, saw the release of Scowl's second studio album, Are We All Angels, produced by Will Yip at Studio 4 in Pennsylvania. The album showcased a blend of alternative rock, grunge, hardcore punk, and pop-punk, representing a departure from the pure hardcore punk of their earlier work. Its lyrical themes included grief, alienation, abuse, and the band's experiences with fame and the hardcore community. The album was critically acclaimed and supported through multiple singles including 'Not Hell Not Heaven' and 'Tonight (I'm Afraid)'. Scowl promoted the album with extensive headlining tours across the UK, Europe, and North America, solidifying their stature as a major force in modern hardcore and alternative rock.

"We are focused heavily on touring as much as possible! We are trying to hit all the places in the US that we haven’t played yet as well as across the pond!", declared Kat Moss in a 2022 interview with hardcore magazine "In Effect," showcasing the band's dedication to connecting with their fans on a global scale.
