Band Timeline

1993-1994

Formation of Menswear

Menswear was formed in 1994 in Camden, London by singer Johnny Dean and bassist Stuart Black after meeting in 1993. They recruited guitarist Chris Gentry and drummer Todd Parmenter, soon replaced by Matt Everitt, plus guitarist Simon White. Their music style was mod-inspired indie rock influenced by Blur and Elastica. Early connections with Blur guitarist Graham Coxon helped the band gain exposure. Managed by Adrian Webb, they quickly attracted music press attention with features in Melody Maker and Select even before releasing a single.
1995

Debut Album Nuisance Released

Menswear released their debut album Nuisance in 1995 on London Records' Laurel label after signing a lucrative deal following just five gigs. The album illustrated their indie rock style but was characterized as more notable for their image than music depth. Nuisance spawned five singles, with "Being Brave" achieving their only top ten UK hit. Their single "Daydreamer" reached number 14 but sparked accusations of plagiarism. Despite the album's commercial push, internal tensions began to surface within the band.
1996

Lineup Change and Musical Direction Shift

In 1996, drummer Matt Everitt left the band due to personality differences, a move later regretted by Dean as Everitt was the sensible anchor of the group. He was replaced by Darren Tudgay with keyboardist Paul Fletcher joining. The band released the standalone single "We Love You" which reached number 22 on the UK charts and indicated a shift in the band's musical style. Work began on their second album, marking a departure from their previous mod and Britpop influences toward a broader sound.
1997-1998

Second Album and Band Split

Menswear recorded their second album Hay Tiempo! but it was rejected by London Records and only released in Japan by a different label. With struggles in their career momentum and changes in lineup, the band eventually split up in 1998. Their initial active period was marked by early rapid success and notable singles but hindered by creative differences and loss of label support.
2013

Band Reformation

Menswear reformed in 2013 with original frontman Johnny Dean as the only original member. Dean emphasized that the identity of the band lay primarily with the lead singer rather than the instrumentation, signaling a new phase for the band. This reformation allowed the band to reconnect with fans and perform with a refreshed lineup but maintained the legacy of their 1990s Britpop-era as central to their identity.
