Band Timeline

1994

Formation of Creed in Tallahassee, Florida

Creed was formed in 1994 in Tallahassee, Florida by lead vocalist Scott Stapp and lead guitarist Mark Tremonti, who were longtime friends and classmates. The original lineup was completed with bassist Brian Marshall, drummer Scott Phillips, and rhythm guitarist Brian Brasher (who left in 1995). Initially, the band performed locally, with their early songs exploring themes of Christian theology and spirituality influenced by Stapp's background. They also briefly performed under the name “Naked Toddler” before settling on Creed, inspired by a former band name of Marshall's prior group.
1997

Release of debut album 'My Own Prison' and initial rise to fame

In April 1997, Creed self-released their debut album 'My Own Prison' on their label Blue Collar Records. The album was recorded on a limited budget of $6,000 with producer John Kurzweg. Despite initial local sales of 6,000 copies in Florida, the album attracted industry attention, leading to a deal with Wind-Up Records. The record spawned successful singles that established Creed's presence in the post-grunge rock scene, gaining commercial notice despite mixed critical reception. This debut marked the beginning of the band's substantial commercial success and helped set the foundation for their future rise.
1999

Release of 'Human Clay' and breakthrough success

'Human Clay,' Creed's second studio album, was released in 1999 and became a massive hit, certified diamond (11× platinum) by the RIAA. The album included the Billboard Hot 100 number one single "With Arms Wide Open," which won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Song in 2001. The album further solidified Creed's dominance in the post-grunge era with multi-platinum sales, eventually becoming one of the best-selling albums of the decade. This period marked Creed's peak commercial success and their establishment as a major rock act worldwide.
2000

Bassist Brian Marshall leaves Creed

In 2000, Brian Marshall, the original bassist of Creed, left the band due to personal and professional reasons. This departure was significant as the band had just experienced immense success with their second album, 'Human Clay.' To fill the gap, guitarist Mark Tremonti took over bass duties for the band's next album. This lineup change occurred during a crucial phase in Creed's career as they prepared for their third album and continued global touring.
2001

Release of third album 'Weathered' featuring Tremonti on bass

Creed released their third studio album, 'Weathered,' in 2001. Mark Tremonti played bass guitar in addition to his usual lead guitar role following Brian Marshall's departure. The album continued Creed's commercial success, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 and spawning hits that consolidated their place in early 2000s rock. However, despite commercial success, the band was experiencing internal tensions leading to future challenges.
2004

Creed disbands; members pursue separate projects

By 2004, Creed officially disbanded amid growing internal issues and Scott Stapp's personal struggles. Following the breakup, Stapp pursued a solo music career while other members Mark Tremonti, Scott Phillips, and Brian Marshall formed a new band called Alter Bridge, recruiting vocalist Myles Kennedy. This split marked an end to Creed's run as a band during their initial decade of success.
2009

Creed reunites and releases fourth album 'Full Circle'

After a five-year hiatus, Creed reunited in 2009 to record and release their fourth studio album, 'Full Circle.' The album marked the return of the original lineup and aimed to recapture the band's signature post-grunge sound. Following its release, Creed toured actively, reconnecting with their fanbase and reestablishing their presence in rock music, although the reunion was relatively short-lived.
2012

Second separation of Creed

After active touring and promotion of 'Full Circle,' Creed separated again in 2012. The band members resumed other pursuits, and there was no immediate announcement of future projects under the Creed name. This hiatus reflected the ongoing challenges of sustaining the group dynamic over time.
2023

Creed reunites after eleven years and plans future tours

In July 2023, Creed reunited once more after an eleven-year break. The band announced headlining tours scheduled for 2024 and 2025, signaling their return to the live music scene. This latest reunion marks a new chapter in the band's long and influential career, highlighting their enduring popularity and impact on rock music.

Story of Creed

Creed: A Post-Grunge Powerhouse

Emerging from the Florida sunshine in 1994, Creed quickly became a cornerstone of the post-grunge movement, captivating a generation with their raw energy and anthemic vocals. Their meteoric rise saw them unleash three consecutive multi-platinum albums, with their 1999 masterpiece, Human Clay, achieving diamond status (11x platinum) – a testament to their undeniable impact.

Creed's signature sound, driven by Scott Stapp's soaring vocals and Mark Tremonti's blistering guitar riffs, resonated with millions worldwide. The band's impressive catalog boasts over 28 million records sold in the US alone, topping 53 million globally, solidifying their place as the ninth best-selling musical act of the 2000s.

Their early albums, My Own Prison and Human Clay, dominated the charts despite lukewarm critical reception. The latter, featuring the chart-topping single "With Arms Wide Open" (a Grammy winner for Best Rock Song), remains one of the best-selling albums of all time.

After the departure of bassist Brian Marshall in 2000, the band released their critically acclaimed Weathered album in 2001, with Tremonti taking on bass duties. Following their disbandment in 2004, Stapp embarked on a successful solo career while the remaining members formed the critically acclaimed band Alter Bridge with Myles Kennedy.

The year 2009 saw Creed's triumphant reunion, culminating in the release of their fourth album, Full Circle, and numerous sold-out tours. Although they went their separate ways again in 2012, Creed's legacy remained strong, captivating fans with their powerful music and intense performances.

After an eleven-year hiatus, Creed returned to the stage in July 2023, igniting a new wave of excitement with the announcement of a headlining tour in 2024. Their unwavering commitment to their music and their loyal fan base ensures that Creed will continue to be a major force in the rock scene for years to come.
