Band Timeline

2000

Formation of As I Lay Dying

As I Lay Dying was formed in 2000 in San Diego, California by vocalist Tim Lambesis after leaving the band Society's Finest. Initially starting as a duo with drummer Jordan Mancino, they first met as a band in February 2001. Both were previously in the hardcore punk band Point of Recognition. The band's name was inspired by William Faulkner's 1930 novel "As I Lay Dying", though the band's music and lyrics are not directly related to the novel. This marked the beginning of a significant American metalcore band.

Debut Album: Beneath the Encasing of Ashes Released

Shortly after their formation and signing with Pluto Records, As I Lay Dying recorded their debut studio album titled "Beneath the Encasing of Ashes," which was released in June 2001. During this period, the band expanded from a duo to a more complete lineup to include additional guitarists and a bassist to support extensive touring. The band also recorded five songs for a split album with San Diego post-hardcore band American Tragedy. Through these early works, the band established their presence in the metalcore scene.

Frail Words Collapse and Record Deal with Metal Blade Records

In early 2003, after their contract with Pluto Records expired, As I Lay Dying sought new label opportunities and secured a deal with Metal Blade Records in March 2003. Following this, they released their second studio album, "Frail Words Collapse," in July 2003. Produced by Tim Lambesis, the album achieved modest chart success, reaching No. 30 on Billboard's Independent Albums chart. This album helped increase their popularity, cementing them as an emerging force in metalcore.

Their fourth studio album "An Ocean Between Us" peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard 200 and No. 1 on the Top Rock chart, marking a commercial breakthrough. They also earned a Grammy nomination in 2008 for the song "Nothing Left" from the album. This period represented the band's height of commercial and critical success.

Release of The Powerless Rise and Continued Acclaim

After a three-year writing process, As I Lay Dying released their fifth studio album "The Powerless Rise" in May 2010. The album was met with widespread critical acclaim for its technical proficiency and songwriting depth. The period saw continued tours and solidified their discography with a mature and refined metalcore record.

Indefinite Hiatus Due to Tim Lambesis' Legal Issues

In 2014, the band went on an indefinite hiatus due to vocalist Tim Lambesis being convicted and sentenced to six years in prison for soliciting the murder of his estranged wife. Story of As I Lay Dying

Hailing from San Diego, California, As I Lay Dying emerged in 2000, forged by vocalist Tim Lambesis. Solidifying their lineup in 2001—which included Lambesis' Point of Recognition bandmate Jordan Mancino—the metalcore titans went on to unleash a formidable discography: eight studio albums, a split album, and two compilations. Their impact resonated powerfully; An Ocean Between Us, their fourth studio effort, climbed to #8 on the Billboard 200 and conquered the Top Rock chart. The band became festival mainstays, electrifying crowds at Wacken Open Air, With Full Force, Soundwave Festival, Warped Tour, Bloodstock Open Air, and Taste of Chaos. Their achievements extend beyond chart success; they snagged MTV2's "Ultimate Metal God" award (2007), were crowned "Artist of the Year" at the San Diego Music Awards three times (2005, 2007, 2008), and even received a Grammy nomination for "Nothing Left" in 2008. The Powerless Rise, their fifth studio album, a meticulously crafted three-year project, dropped in May 2010 to widespread critical praise. Their final studio release before their hiatus, Awakened, arrived on September 25, 2012.
