2001

Formation of Arcade Fire

Arcade Fire was founded around 2001 in Montreal, Quebec by Win Butler and Josh Deu, high school classmates who met at Phillips Exeter Academy. While attending university, they began creating music together and recruited Régine Chassagne, a music student, to join the band. Early band members included Tim Kile, Myles Broscoe, Dane Mills, and Brendan Reed among others. They rehearsed at McGill University and recorded early material, including a live Christmas album during a party in 2001. 2004

Breakthrough with debut album 'Funeral'

Arcade Fire released their critically acclaimed debut studio album, 'Funeral', in September 2004. The album was recorded primarily in Montreal in August 2003 and was named in reference to family deaths experienced by members during its production. With themes around loss and change, 'Funeral' featured songs reflecting personal and communal stories, especially the 'Neighborhood' suite inspired by a power outage experience.
